Debut Super Mario Bros. 3

The Chain Chomp is a recurring enemy in the Mario series.

Information

A Chomp is little more than a spherical head with a vicious-looking maw attached to a long chain. It can move around without any limits if it is not attached to a stake, and even move off the ground by its sheer ferocity, but because of the likely danger a Chomp poses to almost everyone around it, they are usually encountered tied down to guard a location. They are usually portrayed as dog-like with canine barks. Chomps appear in many Mario Games, and sometimes have variations on the original form.

Chain Chomps appear in their normal form in Super Mario Bros. 3, the World 5 fortress of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and New Super Mario Bros..

Other Appearances

  • Chain Chomps appear in several The Legend of Zelda games, usually referred to as BowWows. First, enemies that strongly resemble Chain Chomps (naked Kerubin in the Japanese version) appear in the Turtle Rock dungeon in A Link to the Past. In Link's Awakening, they are first called BowWows, and Madam Meowmeow has two that she keeps as household pets, one being large and chained outside, while the second smaller one lives inside of the house and is part of the trading sidequest. At one point in the story the large BowWow is stolen by a gang of Moblins and Link must rescue him. Afterwards Link takes BowWow for a walk, and he eats various enemies as well as obstacles that must be cleared in order to access the Bottle Grotto dungeon. Finally, the BowWow appears as an item in Four Swords.

Trivia

  • The Chain Chomp also appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
  • Additionally, in Yoshi's Island various rocks with Chomp faces on them called Chomp Rocks are found.
