The Pendants of Virtue (known individually as the Pendant of Courage, Pendant of Wisdom and Pendant of Power) are a set of collectible items that Link must obtain as part of his quest in several games of the The Legend of Zelda series. They were originally featured in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and would later serve the same role in A Link Between Worlds. These items have set a precedent that has been followed in many games of the series, in that the first part of the quest involves gathering three objects that are associated with the Golden Goddesses in some way, and they are usually used to access the Master Sword.

Information[edit]

The Pendants of Virtue were three special items that were each associated with a virtue that one of the Three Golden Goddesses represented. Their only known purpose was allow the legendary hero to draw the Master Sword from its resting place in the Lost Woods. The Pendants were hidden in dungeons in order to test potential heroes, although in one case a Pendant was kept by the Royal Family. Two different incarnations of Link, the one from A Link to the Past and the one from A Link Between Worlds, were able to successfully collect the Pendants and claim the Master Sword.

Individual Pendants[edit]

The Pendant of Courage was a green pendant associated with the Goddess of Courage, Farore, and it was the first Pendant to be obtained by both incarnations of Link. In A Link to the Past, it was kept at the Eastern Palace and guarded by a set of Armos Knights. In A Link Between Worlds, it was in the possession of Hyrule's Royal Family. Princess Zelda entrusted Link with the Pendant upon realizing that he was the hero from her dreams. At first, she referred to it as just being a charm, but Sahasrahla soon recognized its true nature and explained it to Link.

The Pendant of Power, colored blue in A Link to the Past and red in A Link Between Worlds, was a pendant associated with the Goddess of Power, Din. In A Link to the Past, it was kept in the Desert Palace and guarded by Lanmolas, while in A Link Between Worlds, it was kept atop Death Mountain's Tower of Hera and guarded by Moldorm.

The Pendant of Wisdom, colored red in A Link to the Past and blue in A Link Between Worlds, was a pendant associated with the Goddess of Wisdom, Nayru. In A Link to the Past, it was kept at the Tower of Hera and guarded by Moldorm, while in A Link Between Worlds, it was kept at the House of Gales and protected by Margomill.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Pendants of Power and Wisdom (and by association Din and Nayru) were colored blue and red, respectively, in their initial appearance. However, all later games starting with Ocarina of Time switched the colors so that Nayru/Wisdom was associated with the color blue, and Din/Power was associated with the color red. This change was reflected in A Link Between Worlds.
  • In A Link Between Worlds, the sprites for the Pendants are identical to the Goddess Pearls from The Wind Waker. They even feature the same symbols, which had originally been associated with the three songs of the Harp of Ages from Oracle of Ages.
  • Moldorm is the only boss who guards a Pendant in both appearances, and in the same location. Notably, in both games it guarded whichever pendant is colored red.
