Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II is the sequel to StarTropics. It was the second to last licensed game released for the NES and was originally released only in America.
Story[edit]
After his adventures in StarTropics, Mike Jones returned to high school. He received a telepathic message from Mica, a survivor from the planet Argonia. She told him how to solve a cipher Mike's uncle found on an Argonian escape pod. Mike visited his uncle and solved the cipher. Afterwards, he read the book and was flung into the past. He must collect the Tetrads while fighting the clones of the newly returned Zoda.
Gameplay[edit]
The game is divided into nine chapters. Every chapter takes place in a different time period. Each area holds different weapons, enemies, items, and bosses.
Unlike the original game, the player isn't limited to a four direction tile-based movement. The player can move freely and in eight directions. The player is also allowed to keep new main weapons as they upgrade. Also, the Psychic Shock Wave's strength is based on the number of hearts they had.
Legacy[edit]
Despite an improved game engine, the game ultimately did poorly as it was forced to compete with the Super Nintendo, which had been out for three years. Like its predecessor the game never made it to Japan. The director and writer of the last game, Genyo Takeda, left the game to Nintendo of America to produce and distribute.
Ports and Remakes[edit]
- StarTropics II became available for download over the Wii's Virtual Console in the last week of 2008 in America, and in 2009 in Europe and Australia. This marked the first time the game was available in Europe and Australia. It was later released again for the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015/2016.
