Cresselia is a shining Pokémon that releases shiny particles from its wings like a veil. It is associated with the crescent moon. On nights around the quarter moon, the aurora from its tail extends and undulates beautifully. Cresselia are also associated with dreams, and it is said that joyful dreams come to those who fall asleep holding a Cresselia's feather. Part of Cresselia's feathers, known as a Lunar Wing, could also be used to drive away the nightmares caused by Darkrai.

Cresselia's signature movie is the self-sacrificial Lunar Dance, in which the Cresselia faints itself while restoring the next Pokémon to full health and a normal status.

In Pokémon; Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Cresselia was initially found at Fullmoon Island, which could only be reached through Sailor Eldritch's ferry from Canalave City after completing the Pokémon League. Cresselia initially flees, leaving behind a Lunar Wing that could be used to save Eldritch's son from a Darkrai-induced nightmare. Cresselia then acts as a roaming Pokémon, appearing throughout Sinnoh until defeated or captured.

Cresselia played a storyline role in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, where she was intent on stopping Darkrai. Cresselia joins the party as a guest at the Dark Crater, and following Darkrai's defeat she could be officially recruited at Sharpedo Bluff. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Cresselia appeared in Hippowodon Temple as a boss during a mission and guarded the Yellow Gem. Cresselia also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at the Silent Forest.

*In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Cresselia was among the Pokémon that could randomly appear in the background of the Spear Pillar stage. It attacked by firing boomerang-like Psycho Cuts into the field and would remain there indefinitely before disappearing. Cresselia has also been represented by a trophy in Brawl and an Ace-rank Primary Spirit in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Cresselia's Spirit would possess Yoshi in a battle at Spear Pillar (with Cresselia in the background), and its defense would increase after a while.

*In the Pokémon anime, Cresselia was featured in an episode of the Sinnoh series where Ash's group traveled to Fullmoon Island in search of Cresselia to cure the outbreak of nightmares at Canalave City. Team Rocket followed them and tried to take Cresselia captive, but Ash's group was able to save it (particularly Dawn's freshly evolved Piloswine). Cresselia was then able to fight off Darkrai for them.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Cresselia appeared in the Platinum arc as one of Palmer's Pokémon and was also shown to be among the legendary Pokémon of Sinnoh that Charon had an interest in.

*Its name is a play on "crescent" (the shape of the moon it is associated with) possibly combined with a play on "Selene" (who is the moon goddess in Greek mythology).
