Fire Emblem: Shin Monshou no Nazo is the twelfth game of the Fire Emblem series as well as the second game released for the Nintendo DS. This game is a remake of Book 2 of the original Monshou no Nazo with a variety of new features, including bonus stages taken from BS Fire Emblem: Akaneia Senki.

A year after the War of Shadows, a new knight begins serving under the war hero Marth at Altea and eventually becomes the "Hero of Shadows", who helps Marth from the shadows. Another year later, Marth is summoned by King Hardin of Arkaneia, his old friend, to quell a rebellion at Grust. This winds up turning into a new war, the War of Heroes.

The game features many of the same gameplay features from Shadow Dragon, but with some twists. There are four difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard and Lunatic) as well as two different modes, Classic and Casual. In a Casual game, unit deaths can be reversed, while under Classic, units still permanently die.

One of the main new features is that the player can create their own unit, who serves as the second main character of the story alongside Marth, the mysterious "Hero of Shadow". Various new chapters and characters are based around this character. Additionally, this game features more Wi-Fi capability than the previous game. Different players can duel each other on different maps and even loan each other characters. There is also an online item shop where players can use their in-game currency to buy rare items. Bonus episodes to play through can also be downloaded.
