Pachirisu is among the types of electric Pokémon that generate electricity in special cheek pouches. They usually channel the electrical charges through their tails. Pachirisu even make fur balls which crackle with static electricity and store them with berries within tree holes. Pachirisu usually live in trees, and a pair of them will often rub their cheeks together to share stored electricity.

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Pachirisu could be uncommonly found at Route 205 (the southern part only in Platinum) and Valley Windworks as well as Fuego Ironworks in Diamond and Pearl. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pachirisu could appear at the Safari Zone's Wetland and Swamp areas if enough Forest or Plains objects were present. It could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Rally and Resort courses, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Pachirisu could be recruited at Foggy Forest, while in Explorers of Darkness it could only be recruited following the completion of a Wonder Mail mission in which a Pachirisu had to be rescued from the fifth floor of the Foggy Forest. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it could be found at Vientown Beach where the player could choose it as a partner Pokémon out of three Pokémon, or if one of the other two Pokémon were picked instead, it the player could befriend it at Ranger School as a quest. The player could then switch between the partner Pokémon at the Partner Farm. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Dolce Island, Teakwood Forest, Rasp Cavern, Lapras Beach and Thunder Temple. A Pachirisu could also be obtained in My Pokémon Ranch from a random trade with Hayley, and it could then be transferred to Diamond or Pearl (as well as Platinum in Japan). In Pokémon Rumble, it was found at Windy Prairie. Pachirisu also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone.

*In the Pokémon anime, Dawn caught a Pachirisu early in the Sinnoh series, and it was her third Pokémon. It was mischievous and she had trouble controlling it, so Dawn initially resigned to her perceived failure and released it. Dawn manged to find it after it defeated Team Rocket and recaptured it. The Pachirisu was regularly used by Dawn for most of her contests after it gained better control of its powers (initially messing up Dawn's hair often with static electricity). She also made a special Ice Chandelier combination move which Pachirisu and Buneary used in contests.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one chapter of the Diamond/Pearl arc featured a Pachirisu belonging to an opponent of Platina's in a Pokémon Contest, and the Pachirisu stole accessories from her Fashion Case when she was not looking, but Platina was still able to win. Volkner also had a Pachirisu which he passed on to Platina through Maylene near the end of the arc. Platina later used it in the Platinum arc.

Trivia
*Its name is formed from a combination of Japanese words "pachipachi" (which is onomatopoeia for electric crackling) with "risu" (which means "squirrel").

*Pachirisu follows the tradition of an electric rodent appearing fairly early in a generation's games which usually has no evolutionary line.
