Another Purple Coin challenge can be found after 120 Power Stars have been collected by both Mario and Luigi.  When this has been done, the Grand Finale Galaxy can be accessed by either brother.  Collecting the 100 Purple Coins here will earn them a 121st star.

Speed Run
Similar to the Speedy Comet in Super Mario Galaxy, Mario will have a time limit in which to complete an existing level during Speed Runs.  However, some levels will now start off with only 30 seconds, forcing the player to collect timers along the way to increase time by 10 seconds.  Unlike the first game, the timer stops once the level's objective has been met and the star has appeared.  Checkpoints can also be used, assuming they have not been removed.

Daredevil Run
The Daredevil Runs from the first game return unchanged for Super Mario Galaxy 2.  Most of these missions involve boss fights, though one requires Mario to trek through the entire level and one requires him to clear both the level and a boss.

The galaxies that feature Daredevil Runs include:

*Spin-Dig Galaxy - Digga-Leg's Daredevil Run

*Bowser Jr.'s Fearsome Fleet - Megahammer's Daredevil Bash

*Grandmaster Galaxy - The Perfect Run

Purple Coin
Like in Super Mario Galaxy, Purple Coin missions require Mario to collect 100 purple coins, often within a time limit.  Only a few galaxies have these missions now rather than every one.  Some of the levels have added Cosmic Clones as well.

The galaxies that feature Purple Coins with no special conditions include:

*Tall Trunk Galaxy - Tall Trunk's Purple Coin Slide

*Sweet Mystery Galaxy - Bulb Berry's Purple Coin Glow

The galaxies that feature Purple Coins with a time limit include:

*Flip-Swap Galaxy - Purple Coin Flip 'n' Sprint

*Flipsville Galaxy - Purple Coin Spin Speed Run

*Starshine Beach Galaxy - Purple Coin Beach Dash

*Clockwork Ruins Galaxy - The Adventure of the Purple Coins

*Rolling Coaster Galaxy - Purple Coins on the Rainbow Road

The galaxies that feature Purple Coins with Cosmic Clones include:

*Puzzle Plank Galaxy - Purple Coin Shadow Vault

*Mario Squared Galaxy - Luigi's Purple Coin Chaos

Romp
Romp missions require Mario to defeat 30 enemies within 60 seconds.  These enemies include Spinies, Crabbers, and Octoombas depending on the mission.  For certain levels, Rainbow Stars or a Rock Mushroom may also be provided.

The galaxies that feature Romps include:

*Yoshi Star Galaxy - Spiny Rainbow Romp

*Boulder Bowl Galaxy - Rolling Crabber Romp

*Shiverburn Galaxy - Octo-Army Icy Rainbow Romp

*Flash Black Galaxy - Dark Octo-Army Romp

Cosmic Clone
Prankster Comets that generate Cosmic Clones require Mario to collect a Power Star the same way he did in the normal mission, only now while being tailed by his dark duplicates.  There is a limit to the number of clones that will generate.  In addition, the clones will be destroyed whenever Mario reaches certain points of the level or when the star is released.

The galaxies that feature Cosmic Clones include:

*Cloudy Court Galaxy - The Shadow Lining

*Haunty Halls Galaxy - Spooky Cosmic Clone Chase

*Chompworks Galaxy - Cosmic Clones in the Chompworks

*Flip-Out Galaxy - Cosmic Clone Wall Jumpers

Double Time
Double Time missions are similar to the Fast Foes missions from Super Mario Galaxy, though it is the platforms that are moving faster rather than the enemies.  Not only are the levels sped up, they are also extended with an additional segment.  1-up Mushrooms and Checkpoint Flags appear more frequently throughout.

The galaxies that feature Double Time missions include:

*Beat Block Galaxy - Silver Stars in Double Time

*Twisty Trials Galaxy - Turning Turning Double Time

Green Prankster Comets
When Bowser is defeated again with all 120 Power Stars in tow, an additional scene will play out during the ending where Rosalina tells the Lumas about the Cosmic Jewels.  This scene prompts the appearance of Green Prankster Comets in every world.  The Green Prankster Comets double the number of stars in each galaxy by hiding Green Power Stars throughout them, often in hard-to-reach or out-of-the-way locations.  Collecting these stars is the only way to unlock the path to the Grandmaster Galaxy.
