=Information=

Staryu is an enigmatic Pokémon that has regenerative properties. It can effortlessly regenerate any portion of its body even if chopped to bits as long as its central core, which is described as a special organ, is intact. At night, the center of its body flickers with the rhythm of the human heartbeat. This is apparently its way to communicate with the night stars. Staryu appear in large numbers at seashores.

Staryu evolves into Starmie when exposed to the Water Stone.

In ''[[Pokémon: Red, Green and Blue Versions|Pokémon: Red, Blue]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Yellow Version|Yellow]]'', Staryu can be found by fishing with the Super Rod at Routes 19, 20 and 21, Seafoam Islands (as well as on foot in ''Red''/''Blue'' or surfing in ''Yellow'') and Cinnabar Island. In ''Yellow'', it could also be fished at Pallet Town and Vermilion Harbor. In ''[[Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions|LeafGreen]]'', they could be fished at Pallet Town, Vermilion Harbor, Cinnabar Island, One Island and Icefall Cave.

In ''[[Pokémon: Gold and Silver Versions|Gold, Silver]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Crystal Version|Crystal]]'', Staryu were found by fishing on Routes 19, 20, 21, 34, 40 and 41, Cherrygrove City, Olivine City, Cianwood City, Cerulean City and Cinnabar Island, but they only appeared at night. In ''[[Pokémon: HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions|HeartGold and SoulSilver]]'', they had an uncommon chance of being found by surfing at Route 47, and they also could be fished at Routes 34, 19 and 40, Cherrygrove City, Union Cave, Olivine City and Cianwood City during swarms. Staryu could also be caught at the Beautiful Beach and Beyond the Sea courses of the [[Pokéwalker]], from which they could be transferred to ''HeartGold''/''SoulSilver''.

In ''[[Pokémon: Ruby and Sapphire Versions|Ruby, Sapphire]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Emerald Version|Emerald]]'', it could be found by fishing at Lilycove City. In ''[[Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Versions|Diamond, Pearl]]'' and ''[[Pokémon: Platinum Version|Platinum]]'', they rarely appeared when fishing at Canalave City and Sunyshore City. In ''[[Pokémon: Black and White Versions|Black and White]]'', they could be found by surfing at Route 13 (being more common in surfing spots).

Staryu could be photographed at the Valley area in ''[[Pokémon Snap]]''. In ''[[Pokémon Pinball]]'', it was found at Seafoam Islands and was also part of the Red Table. It also appeared in ''[[Pokémon Puzzle League]]'' as one of [[Misty]]'s three-Pokémon team. In ''[[Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire]]'', it could be found at the Ocean at the Ruby Field. In ''[[Pokémon Channel]]'', Staryu appeared within Secret Cove. It also appeared in ''[[Pokémon Trozei!]]'' at Phobos Submarine, Endless Battle 36, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.

In ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams]]'', Staryu could be recruited at the fifteenth through twenty-fifth floors of Silver Trench, Grand Sea and Fantasy Strait. In ''[[Pokémon Ranger]]'', they were found at Fall City and Safra Sea. In ''[[Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness]]'', they could be recruited at the eighth through ninth basement floors of Brine Cave and the first five basement floors of Lower Brine Cave. In ''[[Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia]]'' they were found in Puel Sea. Staryu also appeared in ''[[Pokémon Rumble]]'' at Bright Beach.

*In the ''[[Portal: Super Smash Bros.|Super Smash Bros.]]'' series, Staryu has had a recurring appearance as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the [[Poké Ball]] item in every game starting with ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]''. When summoned, Staryu floats in the air, attempts to stop facing an opponent and shoots a stream of stars (representing the Swift move) straight ahead for several moments. 
**Staryu has also been represented by a trophy in ''Melee'', a trophy and sticker in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl|Brawl]]'', a trophy in [[Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U|the 3DS/Wii U game]] and a Novice-rank Primary [[Spirit]] (which comes with a weakness to electricity) in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Ultimate]]''. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Staryu's Spirit would possess [[Rosalina]] & [[Luma]] which would involve them summoning a Staryu from a Poké Ball and healing over time. The [[Star Rod]] item would also commonly appear in the battle.

==Other Media==

*In the Pokémon anime, Staryu was featured as one of Misty's main Pokémon and the one she seemed to use most often in battle until she began using other Pokémon more in the Johto series. Staryu belonging to other trainers have sometimes appeared.
*In the ''Pokémon Adventures'' manga, Staryu was also shown as one of Misty's main Pokémon whom she initially used to defend herself from [[Gyarados]] and [[Koga]]'s [[Rhydon]]. During the ''Crystal'' arc, one chapter had Crystal defeating and capturing a dozen Staryu that had trapped [[Bill]] within thick shell in an attempt to play with him.

*Its name seems to be a simple combination of the words "star" and "you".
*Its ''Super Smash Bros. Melee'' trophy speculates some relation to [[Cleffa]] solely due to both having similar titles involving being star-shaped.
