Torkoal generates energy for itself by burning coal within its body. It will weaken if the fire dies down. Because of this, they usually spend their time digging through mountains for more coal. When one finds coal, the Torkoal uses the coal to fill the empty spaces in its shell and begins to burn it. Torkoal burns more coal when preparing for battle, although when attacked it is also likely to spout thick black smoke to cover its retreat. When it releases smoke from its nostrils, it lets off a sound like a locomotive's horn. Torkoal could also be found commonly within abandoned mines, searching for coal.

*In the Pokémon anime, Flannery's Torkoal initially appeared in several episodes of the Hoenn series, where Team Rocket tried to steal it, and she later used it as her final Pokémon during her gym battle against Ash. It defeated Ash's Pikachu and Treecko with ease, but it ultimately lost to his Corphish. Just several episodes later, Ash wound up befriending and ultimately catching a Torkoal that other Pokémon had been picked on in Steel Valley after helping the Torkoal beat the Steelix ruling the valley to be acknowledged as a worthy opponent. Ash used Torkoal in various battles against gym leaders and at the Ever Grande Conference, but it lost most battles, and Ash sent it back to Professor Oak before moving on to the Battle Frontier. Ash used the Torkoal again for the battle against Norman during the Battle Frontier series and the Valley of the Lily Conference at the end of the Sinnoh series.

*In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Torkoal was featured as the main Pokémon of Tabitha during the Ruby/Sapphire arc. He used it during most of his battles, and the Torkoal's smoke was shown to be capable of hypnotizing or poisoning others.

Trivia
*Its name is a combination of "tortoise" with a play on "coal".
