Tyranitar is a deadly armored Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the third and final form in Larvitar's evolutionary line.

Tyranitar evolves from Pupitar at Level 55. It is overwhelmingly powerful and could level an entire mountain to make a nest. It also knocks down mountains and buries rivers as it rampages, as Tyranitar has an insolent nature such that it does not really care about others. It has a body that cannot be harmed by any attack (although this does not actually apply during gameplay), so it will eagerly challenge strong opponents.

Tyranitar is capable of changing the landscape, using just one hand to cause earthquakes. Map usually have to be drawn in the aftermath of a Tyranitar's actions. They usually roam the mountains in search of new opponents to fight.

Tyranitar is usually not found in the wild and can only be obtained through evolution in most games. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, Tyranitar had a rare chance of appearing in rustling grass on Route 15.

A Shadow Tyranitar could be snagged from Cipher's Evice leader Evice at Realgam Tower in Pokémon Colosseum, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Tyranitar was also featured in the "Mighty Tyranitar" e-Reader minigame, where the player controlled a Tyranitar using Hyper Beam to destroy falling rocks following a volcanic eruption. In Pokémon Trozei!, it could found at Endless Level 20, Forever Level 69, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, but in Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at the second through tenth basement floors of Quicksand Pit.

In Pokémon Ranger, Tyranitar appeared at the Go-Rock Squad Base after the credits, and a Tyranitar was also used by the antagonistic Billy. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Hippowdon Temple. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Faldera Island, Fire Temple and Light Temple. Tyranitar also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Granite Zone.

*In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Tyranitar appeared as an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit (which came with a water weakness). When fought against in Spirit battles, it would possess a giant K. Rool in a battle where the player fighter would periodically receive sudden damage.

Trivia
*Its name seems to be taken from "Tyrannosaurus", due to the Pokémon being somewhat dinosaur-like.
