Chimchar is a flame-tailed monkey-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games as one of the three starter Pokémon for Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Monferno and Infernape.
Information[edit]
Chimchar is a small, monkey-like Pokémon which has a flame on its tail that is fueled by gas in its belly. Unlike Charmander (whose life depends on its tail being lit), Chimchar can safely put out the fire on its tail. In fact, they usually extinguish the flame before sleeping in order to prevent fires. Not even rain can put out the Chimchar's flame, suggesting that Chimchar possibly has direct control over whether or not its flame is lit. The fire does burn weakly when the Chimchar is sick.
It is also known for being a very agile Pokémon. They scale sheer cliffs in order to live atop craggy mountains. Chimchar evolves into Monferno at Level 14.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Chimchar is one of the three starter Pokémon that the player (Lucas/Dawn) can choose from to "steal" from Professor Rowan's bag by Lake Verity.
Other Games[edit]
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Chimchar is one of the starter Pokémon that the player can possibly be transformed into. Chimchar can additionally be found and recruited in the first ten floors of Giant Volcano and the first ten basement floors of the Dark Crater. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, they are found in the Chroma Highlands. In Pokémon Rumble, Chimchar is found in the Fiery Furnace. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Faldera Island and the Dark Temple. Chimchar also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Meadow Zone and the Lava Zone.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- Chimchar has appeared in several episodes of the Pokémon anime set in Sinnoh. Ash's rival Paul owned a Chimchar at one point that he released for being weak, which Ash then caught and raised as his own. Ash's Chimchar has since evolved into Monferno. Other Chimchar have also made appearances throughout the series, and a Chimchar was featured as one of the main characters in the Explorers of Time and Darkness special.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Chimchar wound up being Pearl's starter Pokémon. He received it on accident, however, as Diamond and Pearl had been confused with Lady Platinum's bodyguards and thus were given Pokémon from Professor Rowan that were intended for the bodyguards. This Chimchar evolved into Monferno when training at Eterna City.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name is simply a combination of "chimp" with "char" (which refers to something being burned, and the usage of this word in its name may be intended as a callback to Charmander).
- A trophy of Chimchar appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
