Mikau is a Zora guitarist who becomes one of Link's alternate forms following his death in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask through the Zora Mask.
Background
Mikau was the guitarist for the Indigo-gos and lived at the Great Bay with the other band members. He shared a room with the drummer, Tijo, and he also often joined with the bassist Japas in jam sessions. However, the bandleader Evan was usually too proud to accept any pieces of music that originated from Mikau and Japas's jam sessions. Mikau also had a close relationship with the singer, Lulu, although the full extent of their relationship is somewhat vague.
He was mostly left in the dark when Lulu lost her voice and laid a group of Zora eggs. She finally told him about the eggs after they had been stolen by the neighboring Gerudo pirates. Mikau than rashly went after the Gerudo pirates himself to rescue them, but he was mortally wounded and left for dead by them near the shores of the Great Bay. He could be found there at any point during the three-day timespan by Link, who brings Mikau to shore. Mikau manages to get on his feet and play one last song in which he tells Link all that had happened so far and asks him to heal his soul.
When Link played the Song of Healing, Mikau saw one last vision of himself with Lulu and the band. His body faded away and was replaced by the Zora Mask, which contained his spirit. At that point, Mikau's ghost appeared to Link and requested that he set up a grave for him and help Lulu to reclaim the eggs and her voice.
Oddly enough, Mikau is seen performing with the rest of the Indigo-Gos at the Milk Bar in the game's ending on the fourth day. This means that it is either actually Link in Zora form (which is unlikely due as Link seemed to be leaving Termina with Epona at the time) or that Mikau's death was undone like many of the tragedies that occur during the three days before the moon's fall.
Abilities
Mikau seems to be the closest to a fighter among the Zoras seen in Majora's Mask, and it is said that he is descended from ancient Zoran heroes. Of the abilities Link shows while using the Zora mask, it is uncertain which of the abilities are exclusive to Mikau and which abilities were possessed by other Zoras.
Regardless, aside from being an excelling swimmer Mikau could fight in hand to hand combat with the sharpened fins on his arms. He could also fire out his arms in a manner similar to boomerangs. Interestingly, he could also generate an electric shield around his body while underwater at the expense of magic power.
Trivia
- Mikau is most likely to be the father of Lulu's eggs, as evident in Lulu's hesitations about telling Mikau about the eggs as shown in her diary, as well as Mikau's determination in retrieving the eggs for her.
- He plays a special guitar that seems to be made out of fishbones. A real guitar modeled to resemble it and known as the "Jackson Zoraxe" has been produced in limited numbers.
- Although Mikau is not an experienced hero like Link or Darmani, it is said that he is descended from Zoran heroes.
