Renault is a playable unit in Fire Emblem. He is a bishop with a dark past and ties to Nergal.

Background

Renault once was a mercenary serving Caelin. He was known as Renault the Impervious because he did not fear death and was very brave. He also trained a young Wallace, who promised to never use the skills Renault taught him for evil. Everything changed one day when a friend, whom he loved like a brother, died in battle. Renault became desperate to regain his lost friend and freely volunteered himself to become Nergal's assistant when Nergal was experimenting to create his first morphs. Nergal promised to revive Nergal's friend.

Renault committed various atrocities at this time in order to fulfill Nergal's desires. At one point, Renault broke into the home of a famous mercenary, the father of Lucius, and killed him (possibly to gain his quintessence for Nergal). Renault himself was experimented on and became less than human. Nergal's experiments finally reached fruition. He created his first morph, a morph of Renault's old friend. However, the morph was soulless and emotionless. Renault was disgusted by this blasphemy and left Nergal's side.

Seeking solace, Renault became a bishop in the church of St. Elimine and lived in one of the ruins of Valor Isle, despite Nergal's presence on the island. In Fire Emblem, Renault was first seen in "Imprisoner of Magic" (Eliwood Chapter 18x, Hector Chapter 19x), when he claimed to be an a pilgrimage and gave the visitors a Goddess Icon in order to end the battle. Then in "Victory or Death" (Eliwood Chapter 30, Hector Chapter 32), he could be recruited into Eliwood's company by visiting the ruins. Renault did not want to hear their story; he merely wanted to put an end to the conflict on the Dread Isle. He joined with Eliwood's group in the last few battles and possibly even had a battle with Nergal. After the final battle (both in his default ending and his special ending with Isadora), Renault vanished, and it was if he never existed.

Support Conversation Summaries

Renault is capable of having Support conversations with five other characters.

• Bartre- In the first conversation, Bartre confronts Renault and challenges him to a match, claiming that he saw him as a strong warrior and had a good sense for strong warriors, but he also admitted he was right nearly half of the time. In the second conversation, Renault asks Bartre why he seeks power. This causes Bartre to howl in pain because difficult conversations hurt his head. Renault asks him his dream, but Bartre says that he only seeks to be strong. Renault is amused and agrees to spar with Bartre. In the final conversation, Renault had not held up to his promise due to all the fighting surrounding them. Bartre angrily orders Renault to punch him as hard as he can in the face. Renault reluctantly complies, only to hit Bartre in the eye and knock him out. Having to punch and heal Bartre greatly tries Renault's nerves.
• Canas- In the first conversation, Canas asks Renault about his time on the Dread Isle and asks him if he knew anything about Nergal's morphs. He also asked if morphs had souls, but Renault said that he did not know. In the second conversation, Canas continued pondering aloud to Renault about the morphs and their origins. Renault then told him more about the morphs but did told Canas that he did not know how he knew these things, and that his whole past is a mystery. In the third conversation, Canas presses on in asking about the morphs while apologizing to Renault, saying that he needed knowledge. But first Renault asked Canas the same question Canas had first asked him, if morphs had souls. Canas said that he now believed they did. Renault then told Canas about his past as a mercenary whom Nergal experimented on, a long time ago.
• Isadora- Isadora meets with Renault and says that she is honored to protect a bishop, being a believer in the teachings of St. Elimine. However, Renault says he is unworthy of being called a bishop and led a bloody life as a mercenary before becoming a bishop. He tells her he became a follower of Elimine following the death of a friend. In the second conversation, Isadora makes a confession to Renault. She tells him about her background and the guilt she sometimes feels from killing her opponents. But Renault says he is a fraud and can offer her no solace. In the third conversation, Renault notices that Isadora doesn't look good and tells her to survive so she can return to her village. He finally thinks up some advice for her problem, and he tells her to use her doubt to become something more, to make her human, instead of casting it aside to become a puppet that kills. He says that he has lived this way since he found himself, saying that some are sustained by faith, but there are no answers for him.
• Lucius- Renault discovered Lucius's illness, and Lucius said that he suffered from a sickness of the soul, but he constantly strove to overcome it so that he could help others. Renault comforted Lucius. Afterwards, Lucius was getting better with Renault's advice, and Renault asked Lucius to recount the blemish on his soul that caused his sickness. Lucius told Renault the whole story about the death of his parents, but Renault's face went red during the account and he asked Lucius to excuse him. Lucius later confronted Renault and asked if he had done something to upset Renault, then begged his forgiveness. Renault then said it was his own fault. Lucius did not understand and fell asleep soon afterwards. Renault then recounted how it was he who killed Lucius's father. At that point Lucius instantly forgave Renault for his past crimes, saying that he felt Renault's grief, and that it felt like his own.
• Wallace- Wallace meets the Bishop Renault and is honored to be fighting alongside him. In the second conversation, he notes Renault's resemblance to the mercenary of the same name whom he knew so long ago, but he does not believe that the mercenary Renault could be the same as the bishop he was talking to. Wallace said he wanted to see his old mentor one more time to tell him that he had accomplished his promise. In the third conversation, Wallace has become better friends with Renault. Wallace says that fighting alongside Bishop Renault has made him less eager to talk to his old friend, because he came to feel that the mercenary was watching him from heaven...
