The Ice Arrow is an elemental arrow that has appeared in several The Legend of Zelda games. It is one of three elemental arrows, along with the Fire and Light Arrows.
Information
The Ice Arrow is the result of a normal arrow being imbued with the elemental power of ice. This arrow's power will cause a freezing effect instantly upon hitting a target. In their first appearance, only enemies could be frozen, which makes them easier to defeat. In later appearances, Ice Arrows could be used on water or magma to create temporary platforms for Link to cross. Each Ice Arrow consumes a portion of magic power in most appearances. Link can switch the elemental charge of the arrows between Fire, Ice and Light (or choosing to return to normal arrows) through the inventory screen in initial games, while in Breath of the Wild Ice Arrows had their own stock separate from normal arrows.
Appearances
The Ice and Fire Arrows were originally bonus items from Ocarina of Time that were unnecessary for completion of the game, with the Ice Arrows being the prize for completing the Gerudo's Training Grounds. In Majora's Mask, the Ice Arrows were the treasure found at the Great Bay Temple. In The Wind Waker, the Fairy Queen would infuse Link's arrows with both fire and ice powers when Link visited her at the Mother & Child Isles after saving Aryll from the Forsaken Fortress. The Ice Arrows could be then used to temporarily cool down Fire Mountain so that Link could safely enter it.
In Breath of the Wild, Ice Arrows were used by enemies as well as Link. Like most items in this game, they could be obtained through various means throughout the game's expansive setting with no specific way to first gain them. Fire Arrows could be found in treasure chests, purchased from shops or dropped by some defeated enemies.
Trivia
- In The Wind Waker, the Ice Arrows could be combined with the Skull Hammer for a combo that will destroy most enemies instantly.
- In Hyrule Warriors, the Ice Arrow appears as an Item Card that could be used on the Adventure Mode map to clear away rings of fire.
