Phantoon is one of the four monster bosses of Super Metroid, being the boss of the Wrecked Ship. He is also featured as a bonus final boss in Metroid: Other M.

Information[edit]

Phantoon was a mysterious being that was described in the instruction manual as the ghost of the Wrecked Ship. It took on the appearance of a one-eyed squid-like creature, and according to the instruction manual also had tapped into the brainwaves of Mother Brain, although the extent to which Mother Brain controlled Phantoon as well as the extent to which Phantoon was affiliated with the Space Pirates is unclear.

Super Metroid[edit]

When battling Samus Aran, Phantoom shed its own form of tears from its closed eye, which were blue flaming eyes that encircled Phantoon. When its eye was closed, Phantoon was transparent as well as translucent and thus could not be harmed by Samus's attacks. However, whenever it opened its eye, Phantoon would become solid and could be attacked with any of Samus's weapons. Samus eventually destroyed Phantoom, which restored the Wrecked Ship's power as well as clearing out the resident ghost-like Coverns, which were presumably subservient to Phantoon.

Other M[edit]

Phantoon returned some time later, apparently acting independently, and attempted to take control of the freshly abandoned Bottle Ship, summoning various monsters from vortexes to battle Samus Aran. She eventually found Phantoon hovering in space outside the control room, and the battle began. Phantoon began to shatter the room's windows while summoning disembodied Rage Hands to attack Samus. Phantoon eventually smashed through and began attacking Samus directly by firing steams of the blue flaming eyes. It also attacked with its tentacles, lasers fired from its own eye and special vortexes.

Once more, Phantoon's weakness was its eye, although this time it was shown to be mounted on a moving stalk, and Phantoon often attempted to shield its eye with vortexes. Regardless, Samus was able to continue blasting it until it was finished when either Samus used a Lethal Strike or the eye burst. Phantoon's remains then drifted back to space, glowed in a flash of light and exploded.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

Trivia[edit]

  • As with Draygon, it is uncertain if Phantoon was actually part of the Space Pirates or just a hostile lifeform of the planet, as Phantoon was also depicted in the stone statue at Tourian.
  • Although Phantoon is described as a ghost and has specific ghost-like properties in Super Metroid, Other M features a clearly living and more organic Phantoon, so it is possible that it might be another of the same species. Notes on the Other M concept artwork, however, imply that the two are the same species and that Phantoon actually exists as two bodies (a multidimensional corporeal body and an astral body). Phantoon apparently exists in multiple dimensions at once, which is why the lower half of its body is not seen.
  • According to notes on concept artwork for Other M, Phantoon is not native to Zebes and actually had been hidden on the ship that the Ancient Chozo took to Zebes.
