Rath is a playable unit in Fire Emblem. He had a quiet and serious nature and operated as a lone wolf for most of his life.
Background
Rath was born to Dayan the Silver Wolf, chief of the Kutolah tribe. However, when he was less than four years old, the Kutolah's diviner saw a bad omen in the stars. Because he was the chieftain's son, the toddler Rath was sent into exile so that he could one day stop the disaster. All Rath knew of the disaster was that it involved a dark flame that consumed all (possibly predicting the fire dragons that attacked in the final chapter). Rath learned to survive on his own and travelled by himself for fourteen years.
At one point, Rath worked for the Marquess Araphen as the captain of the castle guard, putting up with the marquess's predjuce against those of the Sacaen tribes. Rath was first seen in "Chapter Six: Blood of Pride" in Fire Emblem. The town was attacked by minions of Lundgren, and Rath made his entrance when he saved Lyn from an assassin, thinking she was a fellow Sacaen. Rath found that not only was she Sacaen, but she was also heir to the throne of Caelin. Rath worked together with Lyn and her companions in unlocking the underground passageway so that they could save the marquess. After the attack was ended, Marquess Araphen rejected his offer to help Lyn simply because of her Sacaein heritage. It is at this point that Rath told off the marquess and resigned from his post. Rath joined with Lyn's group for the remainder of their quest and brought them 5000 gold. After the journey was complete, Rath snuck out of the following ceremonies to continue working as a mercenary.
One year later, Rath resurfaced during "Kinship's Bond" (Eliwood Chapter 21). He was part of a band of mercenaries sent to aid Hector and his companions in fighting off Eubans's mercenaries. If Lyn talked to Rath, he would then join with Eliwood's group for the remainder of the journey.
Possible Fates
Rath has two different endings. In both endings Rath returns to the Sacae Plains after the journey is complete and eventually fathers Sue. It's possible for both endings to have taken place, if Lyn's ending takes place after his default ending. His whereabouts in Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi (when most of the Kutolah were wiped out in battle with Bern), and whether or not he's still alive, are unspecified.
- Default Ending- Rath returns to the Kutolah. Dayan welcomes him warmly due to the deeds he accomplished during his time in Eliwood's company.
- Lyn and Rath's Ending- Lyn meets Rath after she comes to live in the Sacae Plains. They lived happily in the plains and had a daughter, Sue, together.
Support Conversation Summaries
Rath is capable of having Support conversations with only three other characters.
- Guy- Guy is lost when he meets up with Rath, and they find that they both hail from the Kutolah clan. In the second Support conversation, they discuss Lyn, and Rath tells him of her Sacaen heritage when Guy suspects her of being from Sacae as well. Rath then asks Guy why he left the Kutolah, and Guy says he left to perfect his swordfighting art so he could defend his tribe and his mother to the best of his ability. Guy later catches up with Rath and asks to defend him, wanting to repay Rath for helping him when he was lost and to fulfilll his duty to his fellow tribesmen, and prove himself as a true warrior of the Sacae. Guy then struggled to follow Rath as he rode on horseback, ending on a comical note.
- Lyn- Lyn begins to ask Rath why he is always so silent and seems so angry, thinking he is angry at her, but he assures her otherwise. Lyn later asks Rath about his past and finds out how he was exiled from his tribe when he was less than four years old. This leads Lyn to realize that both she and Rath share the feeling of being alone, and she says that she feels safe near Rath.
- Wil- Wil seems glad to see Rath again (as Rath was also a member of "Lyndis's Legions"), but Rath remains silent for the most part. Wil offers to fight alongside him as a team and goes to acquire more arrows from Merlinus. Wil then continued telling Rath more about himself and his skills, and how he wanted to be better to protect Lyn. Wil got Rath to admit that they were friends, although Rath also found Wil to be strange. In the final conversation, Rath teaches Wil how to ride a horse and swears to be successful by Mother Earth, Father Sky and the honor of his tribe, saying that Wil had taught him something important as well.
