Heatran is a lava-dwelling legendary Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games.

Information

Heatran is a Pokémon with a body made of rugged steel that is partially melted in several places due to its own heat. Heatran also has cross-shaped feet which it can use to crawl on ceilings and walls after digging into them. They usually live in volcanic caves and can cause horrific volcanic eruptions if awakened (with a Heatran's awakening once being connected to a Magma Stone). Heatran has magma flowing through its body like blood.

Charon of Team Galactic sought this Pokémon in Platinum for use in holding the area hostage, but he was stopped by Lucas/Dawn and Looker (although Looker's carelessness would result in Heatran being awakened anyway).

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Heatran was found in the chamber at the back of Stark Mountain. It would only appear there after the Magma Stone was taken from the chamber and returned. This is done by Buck in Diamond/Pearl and by Looker in Platinum.

Heatran appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness as the boss of Giant Volcano and guarded the Fiery Drum. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was a boss at the Volcano Cave during one mission in which it had to be defeated to earn the Red Gem. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared as a boss for in Faldera Volcano in one of the Wi-Fi missions where it was causing dangerous eruptions, and after being caught it could be transferred to any of the third generation games. In Pokémon Rumble, it appeared at Fiery Furnace. Heatran also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Lava Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, Heatran was featured in the twelfth movie where it was one of the Pokémon under the forced control of the antagonist, Marcus. The protagonists and Ash's Pikachu were able to help it come to its senses and turn on Marcus. Heatran was also featured in a late episode of the Sinnoh series where a Pokémon Ranger named Ben was seeking a Heatran to capture and bring to a wild park in order to protect it from a collapsing mountain, and he was ultimately successful. A Heatran was also shown being entered in the Lily of the Valley Conference near the end of the series.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Heatran was featured during the Platinum arc where it was the first goal that Charon and his Team Galactic sought. It later turned out that Charon was seeking Heatran only as added protection for the Distortion World. Buck tries to foil them, later with Looker's help, but he only winds up inadvertently helping them by grabbing the Magma Stone. Charon used Heatran to attack Buck and Looker, but they were able to survive and ultimately Buck's Claydol was able to return the Magma Stone in order to seal Heatran away.
