Entei is one of the three legendary dog Pokémon introduced in the second generation games.

Information

Entei is a Pokémon said to embody the passion of magma. According to legend, the three legendary dogs (at least the three found in Gold, Silver and Crystal) were originally three nameless Pokémon that died in the burning of the Brass Tower. However, the Pokémon were revived by Ho-Oh as Raikou, Entei and Suicune. Entei is also said to have been born in the eruption of a volcano, and that one is born every time a new volcano appears. Entei has trouble restraining its power, as volcanoes erupt every time it barks, so it spends most of its time racing across the land.

Entei is powerful enough to create massive blasts of fire which consume anything they touch, with the flames it spouts being hotter than a volcano's magma.

In Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, one of the three legendary dogs could be found randomly throughout Kanto after defeating the Elite Four and obtaining the National Pokédex. Entei would only appear if the player chose Bulbasaur as a starter Pokémon. Entei or Raikou would appear instead if Charmander or Squirtle had been chosen.

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, the three legendary dogs were found in the basement of the Burned Tower, looking like they were preserved in stone. Gold accidentally awakes them after arriving, and the three legendary dogs run off and scatter throughout Johto, at which point each could eventually be hunted down and captured.

Other Games

Entei appeared in Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In Colosseum, the Cipher Admin Dakim possessed a Shadow Entei. This Entei could be snagged from Dakim and, after it was purified, the Entei could be traded into the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Entei could be found only from Random Agent Cards or in Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Entei appeared as the boss of the Fiery Field. After being defeated, Entei would transform the Clear Wing into the Red Wing if the player had obtained it, and the player could move on to the Lightning Field. Entei could later be challenged again to make it join the player's group.

In Pokémon Ranger, the Go-Rock Squad used a Capture Styler to take control of the three Legendary Dog Pokémon, to make them cause destruction, and the Go-Rock Squad would defeat them to appear as heroes. The player can initially capture Entei at the Jungle Relic when it is first unleashed, but the Go-Rock Squad still steals it with their Super Styler. Entei is ultimately the final boss battled in the Fiore Temple after the Power Styler is destroyed, which causes Entei to go wild and turn on Gordor, at which point the player must capture Entei in order to calm it. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Entei would appear in the tenth basement level if the player had the Mystery Part or Secret Slab in their bag. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Entei would appear on a random floor out of the fifteenth through twenty-ninth floors of Inferno Cave after accepting its challenge letter. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Entei appeared as the boss of Daybreak Ruins and could be captured (but would not join the party) at Rand's House.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Entei appeared in every game from Super Smash Bros. Melee onwards as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. When summoned, Entei attacks with a Fire Spin that hurts any combatants which are caught in it. Melee also had a trophy for Entei that was unlocked through a Trophy Tussle event match that was fought atop a giant version of the Entei trophy.
  • Entei has also been represented in the form of a trophy and sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and part of an Ace-rank Primary Spirit (with the side effect of boosting speed) that was shared with Raikou and Suicune in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of the three dogs would possess a trio of fighters and battle on a stage where the floor is lava. Entei would be represented by Incineroar, Raikou by Pikachu and Suicune by Greninja.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Entei was first featured in the third movie. However, this talking Entei was actually an illusion created by the Unown to serve as a substitute father for a girl named Molly while her real father was trapped in their dimension. Entei captures Ash's mother to fulfill her wishes for a mother, which attracts Ash and his friends to save her. In the end when Molly requests things to be real again, the Entei sacrifices himself in fighting off the Unown that had created him. A real Entei later appeared in a Johto episode where it appeared to defeat Team Rocket after their plan endangered Mt. Silver's hot spring as well as its Pokémon populace, afterwards using Roar to escape the trainer who was attempting to catch Entei. Shiny versions of the three legendary beasts were also featured in the thirteenth movie, where they were the protectors of Crown City and wound up clashing with Zuroark.
• Entei appears in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where the three Pokémon are awakened from the extra-dimensional prison which The Mask of Ice trapped them in by Yellow. Afterwards, they travel throughout Johto challenging gym leaders and other trainers to find a trainer worthy of wielding them to stop Ho-Oh once it was under the Mask of Ice's control. Entei winds up choosing Blaine as its first master and then Silver] for the final battle after the former was incapacitated. In this incarnation, Entei's flames have healing properties which Blaine uses to heal his condition (and which DJ Mary's Smeargle copies with Sketch).

Trivia

• Like the other legendary dogs, Entei's name is derived from Japanese words, with its name possible of being translated to mean either "blazing heart" (enten) or "flame emperor" (en koutei).
