Slugma is a molten slug-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. Its evolved form is Magcargo.
Information[edit]
Slugma is a Pokémon that has molten magma coursing through its circulatory system instead of blood, carrying essential nutrients and oxygen to its organs. They are commonly found in volcanic areas and are constantly moving to keep their magma bodies from cooling and hardening. Slugma constantly slither around slowly in search of warm places and usually gather at such hot places in groups. Whenever its body cools, it becomes brittle and pieces fall off, reducing Slugma's size.
Slugma evolves into Magcargo at Level 38.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Slugma could be rarely found at Routes 16, 17 and 18, and they were much more common at Route 17 during the daytime. In '"Crystal, Slugma appeared exclusively during the daytime (and still was common at Route 17). They could also be caught at the Volcano Path course of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.
In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Slugma uncommonly appeared at Fiery Path, and in Emerald they also appeared more commonly at Route 113. In FireRed and LeafGreen, it was commonly found in Mt. Ember Cave and also appeared when smashing rocks. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it was rarely found in Stark Mountain.
Other Games[edit]
In Pokémon Colosseum, a Shadow Slugma could be snagged from Roller Boy Lon at Pyrite Town, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Slugma was found at the Volcano on the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at the Phobosphere, Endless Level 49, Forever Level 49 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Slugma was found at the first twelve floors of Mt. Blaze, the five floors of Fiery Field and the sixth through tenth basement floors of Oddity Cave, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness they could be recruited at the first ten floors of Giant Volcano, the first eight floors of Steam Cave and the first twelve basement floors of Dark Crater. In Pokémon Ranger, Slugma was found at Jungle Relic. It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia at Volcano Cave.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- In the Pokémon anime, a Slugma did not appear until near the end of the Johto series when one of Ash's opponents in the Silver Conference owned one which evolved into a Magcargo by the end of the episode. During the Hoenn series, Flannery was shown to have a pair of Slugma that were named Mag and Meg, one of which wound up evolving.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, the chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc which introduced Crystal featured a trio of trouble-making Slugma as the antagonists. Professor Oak first encountered them by Cherrygrove City and attempted to catch them, but the Slugma arrogantly escaped. They then wound up attacking Earl's Pokémon Academy, and despite Oak's attempts to control the situation, Crystal wound up defeating and catching them in her first shown battle. During the Ruby/Sapphire arc, a Slugma was also featured as one of Mack's Pokémon. This Slugma was able to distort the heat around it to give other trainers delusions of their worst memories.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name is a simple combination of "slug" and "magma".
- Although most of its Pokédex entries claim it never sleeps, the Emerald entry contradicts the others by saying that Slugma sleeps near magma. Within the game, it is also still capable of falling asleep in battle like any other Pokémon, and it can even willingly sleep if it learns Rest.
