Pidgit is a bird enemy that has made occasional appearances in the Super Mario series, and it is most commonly seen riding on a flying carpet.

Information

Pidgits are small, seemingly flightless dark birds with stub-like arms. To compensate for their lack of flight, they usually ride around on magical flying carpets. They initially appear in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2. The instruction manual for the latter claims that they bring evil dreams and that their magic carpets were provided by Wart (although it is likely they were obtained from other sources for their later appearances). They use a basic attack of trying to swoop down at Mario and his friends. They are defeated simply by jumping on their head, at which point Mario or one of his friends could ride the Pidgit's carpet temporarily.

They made a unique appearance in Super Mario World after the Special Zone was cleared. At this point, all of the game's Bullet Bills were replaced by Pidgit Bills, Pidgits which were fired out of cannons at Mario and Luigi. Although they had no magic carpets, being fired through air gave the illusion of flight. They were defeated simply by jumping on them. Pidgits made another carpetless appearance in Wario's Woods, where they were known as Black Bats and replaced Wanda during the events in which Wario replaced Birdo at the top of the screen. During this time, the Pidgit directed Toad's activities, but in a biased way by summoning extra monsters. These Pidgits also seemed to be capable of flight. A related creature called Dodorigesu Jr. (Dodorigesu being the Japanese name for the Pidgit, making this creature the equivalent of a Pidgit Jr.) also appeared in Mario & Wario and acted as obstacles that Wanda could easily get rid of.

Pidgits finally appeared again in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, where they were located at Yoshi's Island in the past. They once more rode their carpets into battle and could be injured by jumping on them when they swooped down to attack. Special Pidgits who wielded bags also appeared, which were faster and ran away more often but held higher amounts of coins.

In the ending of Super Princess Peach, what appears to be a group of Pidgits fly over the castle holding up signs which together say "Good job!" and "Congratulations!". Unlike most other Pidgits, these Pidgits are shown flying as perfectly as normal birds, without any signs of magic carpets.

• Pidgits appear in Super Smash Bros. Melee as part of the Kingdom II level, where they are rendered in 8-bit as they appear in Super Mario Bros. 2. As in the original game, the Pidgit could be knocked off of its carpet, at which point the players can ride its carpet. A trophy of the Pidgit also appears in the game. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Pidgit reappears with the updated Kingdom II stage, and Pidgit also appears as an Advanced-rank Support Spirit (with the effect of strengthening aerial attacks) in the game. When fought against in a Spirit battle, it possesses a copy of Princess Peach, with enhanced jumping ability and wearing a Rocket Belt at the match's beginning.

Other Media

• Pidgits appeared in a few episodes of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. This incarnation of the Pidgit was capable of flight and was shown to eat magic carpets. In one episode, King Koopa summoned a group called the Pidgit Express to eat the magic carpet being ridden by Mario's group, but Luigi suddenly remembered that he speaks Pidgit and thus convinced them to instead eat Koopa's carpet.

Trivia

• Its English name is simply a play on "pigeon". Its Japanese name is "Dodorigesu", which seems to be a combination of "dodo" (an extinct, flightless bird) and the Spanish surname "Rodriguez".
