Mr. Sandman is the boxer who acted as the final opponent of the original Arcade Punch-Out!! and since then has consistently appeared as the champion or second-to-last opponent of the World Circuit in later games, often being overshadowed by Super Macho Man from the second arcade game.
Background[edit]
Mr. Sandman was a deadly boxer hailing from Philadelphia. His vernacular included a variety of puns based on nightmares and putting people to sleep, and often times his opponents truly are knocked unconscious after losing to him. He believes in holding back his power until he is in danger of losing a match, at which point he will begin using his special moves such as his trademark uppercut move Dreamland Express (also known as the Nightmare Sleeper). Due to being so large and intimidating, Mr. Sandman is known for being hard to damage. Mr. Sandman first appears in the Arcade game as the fifth and final opponent, ranked the champion of the entire World Video Boxing Association. He returns in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, where he is the #1 ranked fighter in the World Circuit behind Super Macho Man. In Super Punch-Out!!, he is further demoted as he appears as champion of the Major Circuit.
In Punch-Out!! for the Wii, he appears as the champion of the World Circuit for the first time since Super Macho Man's introduction. The slideshow before the battle shows how he earned his title by laying waste to every boxer encountered thus far in the game, ending with Super Macho Man. After being defeated by Little Mac, he works out, becoming bent on revenge. He returns with a new look in Title Defense Mode, with new moves loosely bad off of Mike Tyson's.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In the Super Smash Bros. series, Mr. Sandman has appeared as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and as a Ace-rank Primary Spirit (with the bonus effect of raising the strength of fist attacks) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought in a Spirit battle, Mr. Sandman possesses a larger version of Donkey Kong and is battled in a stamina match at the boxing ring stage, in which the floor outside of the boxing ring is under a slumber-inducing effect.
- In Luigi's Mansion 3, Mr. Sandman is seen on a movie poster found in the Paranormal Productions level, along with Little Mac and Doc Louis. They are in the style of the Wii game, in homage to the developer's previous work.
Trivia[edit]
- He is one of the most recurring characters in the game, having the same amount of appearances as Bald Bull and Super Macho Man (unless Arm Wrestling is counted, in which case Bald Bull would be considered most recurring).
- There is varying inconsistency about his age as well as his record. While games give Mr. Sandman's age as 31, Super Punch-Out!! gives his age as 28 within the game, while its its instruction manual says he is 30.
- In Super Punch-Out!!, he is a palette swap of Bald Bull.
