Illumise is a firefly-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is an exclusively female Pokémon, with its male counterpart being Volbeat.

Information

Illumise is a nocturnal Pokémon that becomes active after nightfall. Illumise are known to attract Volbeat using their sweet fragrances. They gather and lead swarms of Volbeat in drawing geometric shapes with their lit tails in the night sky. Scientists study the patterns they create, and over 200 have been identified. More complex designs will earn an Illumise greater respect from its peers.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions, Illumise appeared at Route 117, being rare in Sapphire but more common in Ruby and Emerald. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it was uncommonly found at Route 229, but was rarer in Pearl.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it could appear at the National Park during the Bug-Catching Contest on Saturdays following the unlocking of the National Pokédex. It could also appear in the Safari Zone's Wasteland area if enough plains areas were present. Illumise could also be caught at the Pokéwalker's Hoenn Field area and could be transferred from there to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In White, Illumise could appear at Route 3 during swarms.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it was found at the Plains of the Sapphire Field and also appeared to paint in new areas during Travel Mode on the Sapphire Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storages 12 and 20, Endless Level 24 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Illumise could be recruited at the fifth through eighth floors of Lapis Cave and the forty-seventh through fifty-second floors of Wish Cave, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was recruitable at the first seven floors of Upper Steam Cave.

• Illumise has appeared in several episodes of the Pokémon anime, usually paired with Volbeat.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, an Illumise appeared in the Pokémon Adventures manga during the Emerald arc where the first digital trainer that Emerald faced at the Battle Factory used one in battle, and Emerald was able to trade his Skarmory to temporarily use it afterwards.
