Metapod is a cocoon Pokémon introduced in the first generation Pokémon games.

Information

Metapod is the cocoon form of Caterpie, evolving from Caterpie at Level 7. Its body within the shell is weak and soft, although its shell is sturdy. Metapod most constantly harden its shell to protect itself, but it can pop out of its shsell with large impacts. The shell is as hard as an iron slab, but Metapod primarily onl hardens and does not move very much while it prepares its soft innards for evolution inside its shell.

Metapod's metamorphosis does not last long, as it evolves into Butterfree at Level 10.

		Blue
		Yellow	Hardens its shell to protect itself. However, a large impact may cause it to pop out of its shell.
		Stadium	When it hardens, only the external shell is transformed. The inside remains tender.
II		Gold	Inside the shell, it is soft and weak as it prepares to evolve. It stays motionless in the shell.
		Silver	It prepares for evolution by hardening its shell as much as possible to protect its soft body.
		Crystal	This is its preevolved form. At this stage, it can only harden, so it remains motionless to avoid attack.
III		Ruby	The shell covering this Pokémon's body is as hard as an iron slab. Metapod does not move very much. It stays still because it is preparing its soft innards for evolution inside the hard shell.
		Sapphire	The shell covering this Pokémon's body is as hard as an iron slab. Metapod does not move very much. It stays still because it is preparing its soft innards for evolution inside the hard shell.
		Emerald	Its shell is as hard as an iron slab. A Metapod does not move very much because it is preparing its soft innards for evolution inside the shell.
		FireRed	Even though it is encased in a sturdy shell, the body inside is tender. It can't withstand a harsh attack.
		LeafGreen	This Pokémon is vulnerable to attack while its shell is soft, exposing its weak and tender body.
IV		Diamond	A steel-hard shell protects its tender body. It quietly endures hardships while awaiting evolution.

In Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen versions, Metapod can be found in Viridian Forest, being common in all of the above games except for Red where it is uncommon. In Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Metapod is also found in Route 25, while in Blue it was also found on Route 24 and in FireRed and LeafGreen it was also found in the Pattern Bush.

In Pokémon Gold and Crystal it is commonly found in Routes 2, 30 and 31 as well as Ilex Forest and the National Park, while in Crystal it is also found in Routes 24 and 25. In Silver it is uncommon and can only be found in the National Park during the Bug-Catching Contest.

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Version, Metapod could be found in Eterna Forest using the dongle method with FireRed in the GBA slot.

In Pokémon Pinball, Metapod could be found by evolution. In Pokémon Snap, Metapod could be found in the River area. In Pokémon Stadium, Metapod and Kakuna are featured in the Rock Harden minigame in addition to being available as Rental Pokémon. Metapod also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Metapod is found in SOL Laboratory 2, Secret Storage 8, Endless Level 4 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Metapod could be found in the seventh and eight floors of the Joyous Tower while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Metapod are found in the first thirteen basement floors of the Mystifying Forest, the twenty-nine basement floors of the Mystery Jungle and the first nineteen basement floors of the Happy Outlook.

• Metapod appears in two episodes of the Pokémon anime after Ash's Caterpie, his own Pokémon, evolves. After Ash saves it from a swarm of Beedrill and promises to take better care of it, it evolves into a Butterfree.
