Noctowl is the evolved form of Hoothoot from the second generation Pokémon games.

Information

Noctowl evolves from Hoothoot at Level 18. It has specially adapted eyes that can concentrate even faint light, enabling it to see in the dark. Their feathers are soft enough that they do not make noise in flight, allowing them to silently sneak up on prey without being detected. When it needs to think, it rotates its head 180 degrees to increase its thinking power, and it is also said to be engaged in complex thinking when it spins its head upside down. Like Hoothoot, it is nocturnal and appears primarily at night.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Noctowl could be uncommonly found on Routes 2, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 43. In Crystal they also appeared on Routes 5, 15, 25, 26, 27, 37, 38, 39 and 43. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, they could also be found on the Pokéwalker's Quiet Cave course.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Noctowl could be found on Routes 210, 211, 216 and 217 as well as the Great Marsh, Acuity Lakefront, Mt. Coronet, Great Marsh, Lake Valor and Sendoff Spring, although in Platinum it only appeared at Route 211 and the Great Marsh.

In all instances, Noctowl could only be found at night.

Other Games

In Pokémon Colosseum, a Shadow Noctowl could be snagged from a trainer in Pyrite Town. After being purified, this Noctowl could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Noctowl appeared in Phobos Jet, Endless Level 44, Forever Level 10 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could only be obtained through evolution, while in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it appeared on the sixth through eleventh floors of Foggy Forest.

Other Appearances

  • In the Pokémon anime, Ash caught a shiny Noctowl during the Johto arc. It served as part of his team, but it had mostly a minor presence aside from playing a part in defeating Morty's ghost Pokémon. Ash later left it at Professor Oak's lab when he left Johto.
  • in the Pokémon Adventures manga, Noctowl was shown as one of Falkner's Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Its name is a combination of "nocturnal" and "owl".
