Pupitar is a shelled pupal Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the middle form of Larvitar's evolutionary line and evolves into Tyranitar.
Information
It evolves from Larvitar at Level 30. It is a pupa that is sealed within a shell and has arms and legs underneath the shell. Pupitar can still move freely and cannot stand still. Its body is as hard as bedrock, and it has great destructive power due to being fast as well. Pupitar's thrashing is apparently powerful enough to topple a mountain. The body is also durable enough to withstand even solid steel. Pupitar also creates a gas within its body which it compress and ejects forcefully to propel itself through the air like a jet.
Pupitar evolves into Tyranitar at Level 55.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In most games, Pupitar could only be obtained in evolution. In Pokémon: Crystal Version, it was very rarely found in an area of Mt. Silver Cave in the morning and daytime only. It was also found within Mt. Silver Cave in HeartGold and SoulSilver, but it was a bit less rare and found in a different part of the cave. In Black and White, they uncommonly appeared at Route 15.
Other Games
In Pokémon Trozei!, Pupitar was found at Endless Level 63, Endless Level 70, Forever Level 13 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the third through fifth floors of Mt. Freeze, the sixtieth through seventieth floors of Buried Relic, the thirty-seventh through forty-fifth floors of Southern Cavern and the sixty-second through sixty-sixth floors of Joyous Tower, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it was found at Quicksand Cave and Quicksand Pit. In Pokémon Ranger, it could be found at Sekra Mountain Range. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Chroma Ruins. Pupitar also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Faldera Island.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime, Pupitar was first featured in several episodes of the Johto series as one of Ritchie's Pokémon. Its only other notable appearance was in an early episode of the Hoenn series as one of the Pokémon belonging to a Pokémon poacher named Rico, and it evolved into a Tyranitar while he was using it to fight Team Rocket.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Pupitar was only seen during a flashback in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, where it was shown as one of Lance's Pokémon during his first battle with Silver. Lance lent the Pupitar to Silver, and it evolved into Tyranitar prior to Silver's actual first appearance in the series.
Trivia
- Its name is based on "pupa", due to it resembling the stage of an insect's life between childhood and adulthood, complete with a cocoon-like form (despite the entire evolutionary line being otherwise unlike an insect).
