Doc Louis is a supporting character appearing in the Punch-Out!! games as Little Mac's trainer and coach.

Background

Doc Louis once was a professional heavyweight boxer, being a heavy hitter in America around 1954. However, he eventually retired and took up to training other up-and-coming boxers. His most well known (and only known) pupil is Little Mac, whom he apparently met by chance once. Despite Little Mac's small stature, Doc Louis taught him everything he knew about boxing and trained him intensely for the World Video Boxing Association challenges in the NES and Wii Punch-Out!!s. His training regimen varied from traditional workouts to riding a bicycle while Little Mac jogged behind him in a pink sweatsuit.

Doc saw Mac through all his battles and his championship.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • Doc Louis made a special appearance in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, in which Little Mac became a playable fighter. He was first shown in Little Mac's trailer for the game, where he trained Mac and acted as the narrator. Within the game, Doc Louis occasionally cheered Little Mac on when his taunts were activated, and he also sometimes appeared with Little Mac on his victory screens. His appearance was accompanied by a trophy as well an item in the Smash Tour mode (which increased the effect of status boosts).
    • In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he had a reprise of his appearances in Little Mac's victory screens and also appeared in Adventure Mode as a Master Spirit. In a Spirit battle, his Spirit would possess Little Mac for a stamina battle in which his statistics steadily grew throughout the fight. After being defeated, his spirit set up shop in an adjacent gym, where he would train any Spirits the player chose to leave there.

Other Media

  • He appears in several of the Punch-Out!! comic strips that were published as part of the Nintendo Comics System. "The First Fight" depicts a version of Little Mac's first meeting with Doc Louis. It is interesting to note that in this comic, he is referred to as Doc Lewis.

Trivia

  • He has a love of chocolate that is brought up throughout the Wii game.
  • In the original NES game, Doc Louis infamously plugs the Nintendo Fun Club when at random points he will urge Mac to join it rather than giving actual battle-related advice between rounds; the Wii installment has a humorous callback to the line where Doc Louis begins to mention the Nintendo Fun Club, but then cuts himself off and instead plugs the contemporary Club Nintendo.
  • Doc Louis has a more interactive role in the Club Nintendo exclusive Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! as the game's single opponent. In between rounds, he'll thank the player for taking his advice and joining Club Nintendo.
  • In the original NES game, Doc Louis would be shown to massage Little Mac's shoulders in between rounds, and the player could press select to speed up the massage as well as cause Mac to gain energy when the next round began, although this would only work once per match.
