Tyrogue is a baby Pokémon introduced in the second generation games that notably can evolve into one of three Pokémon depending on its stats: Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan or Hitmontop.

Information

Despite its youth and small size, Tyrogue is a powerful fighter known for its determination and fierce competitive spirit. Tyrogue are willing to challenge any opponent, abruptly slug targets to keep them from ignoring them, and they keep on fighting even if defeated. Because of this, Tyrogue often nurse injuries from battles with larger Pokémon. They attack without warning and will become stressed if they spend even a day without training.

Tyrogue evolves upon reaching Level 20. The evolution is dependent entirely on its Attack and Defense stats. If Tyrogue has higher Attack than Defense, it will evolve into Hitmonlee. If Tyrogue's Defense is higher than its Attack, it will become a Hitmonchan. And if Tyrogue's Attack and Defense are even, then it will become the perfectly-balanced Hitmontop.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Tyrogue is given to the player by the Karate Master as a reward for defeating him at Mt. Mortar. In Crystal, the player will also receive an egg from the Daycare Couple on Route 34 that has an equal chance of hatching into Tyrogue or any of the other second generation baby Pokémon. In most cases from this generation onwards, Tyrogue could primarily be obtained by a breeding one of its evolved forms with a Ditto.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, wild Tyrogue are found along Route 208 and Route 211 West by using the Pokéradar (only appearing on 211 in Platinum). In Black and White, Tyrogue appeared at Route 10 during swarms.

Other Games

Tyrogue was featured in the e-Reader minigame "Punching Bags" in which the player controlled a Tyrogue and had to hit punching bags from different locations. In Pokémon Trozei!, Tyrogue can be found in the Phobos Walker, Endless Level 14, Trozei Battle or Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Tyrogue make rare appearances on the fifth through eighth floors of Mt. Steel. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, they appear on the first nineteen floors of Mt. Travail as well as the first seventeen basement floors of Lost Wilderness. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, they are found at Pueltown. Tyrogue also appears in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Mt. Latolato.

Other Appearances

• Tyrogue was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime, in which the Tyrogue had developed a cold attitude after being abandoned by its original trainer. However, a new trainer was able to bond with the Tyrogue and use it to compete in the P-1 Tournament.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Tyrogue made mostly brief appearances in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc in which some were shown helping with construction of the Battle Tower, and Bruno was also later shown to own his own Tyrogue. During the Diamond/Pearl arc, Platina's butler Sebastian was shown using several Tyrogue as his own.

Trivia

• The first part of his name, "Tyro", is a term for a beginning student, and it is combined with "rogue" (likely due to its rebellious attitude).
