Tingle is a 35-year old man who lives alone near Port Town. One day he receives a psychic message from an unknown person. He is urged to approach a nearby fountain where he meets [[Uncle Rupee]], a being with a head shaped like a Rupee. He tantalizes Tingle with the promise of a land called [[Rupeeland]] where no one ever has to work hard. All Tingle has to do is to keep throwing Rupees into a pond that eventually becomes a tower. If he does it enough, then Rupeeland is just around the corner...

Unfortunately for Tingle, he lacks any real fighting skills and there are many, many monsters in the world. Although Tingle can get in scuffles himself, the amount of rupees he loses by fighting isn't always worth the payout. For that reason, Tingle can recruit one of the thirty [[Bodyguards in Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland|bodyguards]] who will fight for him or fight with him. However their services aren't cheap and the more they cost, the better they fight.
