The Picto Box (originally referred to as the Pictograph Box) is an item from several The Legend of Zelda games which acts as Zelda's version of a photography camera. A normal Picto Box takes black-and-white pictographs. It can hold only one photograph in Majora's Mask or three in The Wind Waker. In the latter game, the Picto Box could be upgraded to the Deluxe Picto Box, which takes full-color pictographs. The Picto Box has no battle usage and is primarily an optional item that is used primarily for sidequests.

Appearances[edit]

The Picto Box first appeared in Majora's Mask, where Koume would give one to Link at the swamp tourism center after he saved her life so that he could compete in the swamp pictography contest. There were a few other tasks that Link could pull off with the Picto Box at Great Bay, including one that was essential for continuing the game. Link had to show the fisherman a pictograph of a Gerudo pirate to obtain the seahorse that was needed to find the last Zora eggs.

In The Wind Waker, Link could find a Picto Box at Windfall Island prison which a thief had stolen from Lenzo long ago. Lenzo initially gave Link several tasks to perform using the Picto Box as his research assistant. If Link satisfied Lenzo's requests, Lenzo then told him the secret behind color pictography that he had realized in his research: a the bright light emitted by a Forest Firefly. Once Link brought him one from Forest Haven, Lenzo placed it within his picto box to upgrade it into the Deluxe Picto Box. The Picto Box could be used for various sidequests in the game, the most ambitious being Carlov's Nintendo Gallery in which Link had to snap pictographs of every character, creature and boss in the game and show them to Carlov so that he could make special figures of them. He also made only one figurine per day and only used color pictographs. In a New Game Plus, Link started the game with a Deluxe Picto Box.

In the HD remake of The Wind Waker, the Picto Box was modified so that it could store up to twelve photos (with Carlov also being able to make up to twelve figurines per day) and could be used to take self-portraits of Link. Pictures could also be sent to Miiverse through the Tingle Bottle option.
