Debut Star Fox Adventures

Krystal is a supporting character from the later Star Fox games, starting in Star Fox Adventures, where she was a temporarily playable character. She is a mysterious woman with mystical powers, who first met the Star Fox Team on the planet Sauria and later joined them. She also acted as a love interest for Fox McCloud.

Background

She was a mysterious woman whose home planet, Cerinia, was destroyed for reasons yet unknown. Since then, she has spent her time looking to solve the mysteries of her home's destruction. While on her journey, she received a distress signal from planet Sauria, to which she responded. She was well equipped to assist the dinosaurs of the planet, thanks to her knowledge of their Saurian language, her magical staff, and telepathic powers. After initially dealing with General Scales and losing her staff, she started to gather the Krazoa spirits, but she soon ended up being captured by Andross instead. She was then trapped in a crystallized chamber and was used to channel the power of the Krazoas to revive Andross.

Her staff was later found by Fox McCloud, who also responded to Sauria's distress signal and wielded her staff upon finding it. He had discovered that Krystal had been captured and worked to finish collecting the Krazoa spirits. However, after collecting them all, he found that he had been betrayed and that he had inadvertently helped to revive Andross. She was still freed from the crystal, and he was able to prevent her from falling down a chasm. Soon afterwards, Krystal took back her staff and began attacking Andross, while Fox took off in his Arwing to attack more directly.

After Andross was defeated, Krystal arrived on the Great Fox to thank Fox personally. Some time afterward, Krystal joined the Star Fox team and replaced Peppy Hare. Although she was the youngest on the team and not as an experienced pilot, her telepathic powers gave her a particular edge in helping to determine enemies' weaknesses and general plans of attack. She also met a rival in Star Wolf, Panther Caruso, who not only targeted her in battle, but also flirted with her as well. However, her love was clearly for Fox, as she was far more concerned for his safety than with Panther's comments. She proceeded to appear as a supporting character in Star Fox Assault, where she helped Team Star Fox to fight off the Aparoid invasion.

Prior to Star Fox Command, Krystal and Fox admitted their feelings for each other. In response, Fox forced Krystal to leave Star Fox in order to protect her from any danger. Upset by this, Krystal joined the Cornerian Air Forces and was commissioned the standard Cornerian Fighter. She also took up a romance with Panther and a perpetually bad attitude.

Krystal went with Bill Grey's squadron to Katina when it was attacked by Anglars, where Leon and Panther went to pick her up and make her a member of Star Wolf. Fox arrived at this point as well, however, apologizing openly for his actions; Krystal grudgingly went with him. She informed Star Fox of the neutralizing device that Andross had created on Titania and helped them collect it, then followed them to Venom where they defeated the Anglar Emperor.

After their victory, Fox, Slippy, and Falco begged Krystal to rejoin the team. With some reluctance she agreed, and the team moved on to pick up Amanda as well. Despite her return to Star Fox, Fox and Krystal haven't quite patched up their relationship.

Possible Fates

Krystal's fate varies somewhat throughout Star Fox Command. In three endings she makes up with Fox and rejoins Star Fox (or what's left of it), while in three others she joins Star Wolf.

Fox and Krystal's family in Ending 2
  • In Ending 1 (as explained above), Krystal rejoins Star Fox after patching things up with Fox, and Amanda Toad also joins their team.
  • In Ending 2, Krystal patches things up with Fox, and the Star Fox team is disbanded. Fox and Krystal live a quiet and happy life together, and they have a son named Marcus who grows up to lead a new Star Fox team.
  • In Ending 3, Krystal helps the Star Fox team to defeat the Anglar Emperor. However, Krystal is uncomfortable being in the Star Fox team again (likely because in this path Fox does not resolve his "complicated feelings"), so she runs away to join up with Star Wolf. Krystal proves herself to be the toughest of all pilots by starting a new life with Star Wolf and having no regrets.
  • Krystal as Kursed in Ending 4
In Ending 4, Krystal helps Star Wolf to defeat the Anglar Emperor. While the other Star Wolf members are hailed as heroes, Krystal is shunned and ridiculed everywhere she goes due to her betrayal of Star Fox. She eventually leaves Star Wolf and abandons her past life to travel to a distant galaxy. There she becomes a ruthless bounty hunter and changes her name to Kursed. She runs into Fox again years later on the Planet Kew, but he does not recognize her.
  • In Ending 5, Krystal teams up with Amanda Toad, Lucy Hare and Katt Monroe in defending Corneria from invading Anglars. Following the large celebration that ensues, Krystal is reunited with Fox and share their true feelings together. Krystal rejoins Star Fox after receiving a pledge of eternal love from Fox.
  • In Endings 6, 7 and 8, Krystal does not appear and her fate is unknown.
  • In Ending 9, Krystal remains with Star Wolf and together they defeat the Anglar Emperor.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Krystal appears in several hidden conversations that appear when Fox, Falco or Wolf taunt on the Lylat Cruise stage along with other members of Star Fox. She later appeared as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, who would attack opponents with her staff and Freeze Blasts. She also has been represented by a trophy and three stickers (from Adventures, Assault and Command in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U Smash and a Legend-rank Primary Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (using her arf from Adventures). Her Spirit also boosted the magical attack of the player character. When fought in a Spirit battle, Krystal's Spirit possesses Fox and fights alongside Falco and her Assist Trophy self.

Trivia

  • Originally Star Fox Adventures was known as Dinosaur Planet, in which Krystal was not only the protagonist, but a 16 year old feline. The game was altered to fit the Star Fox universe, thus making Krystal older, a fox, and the 'damsel in distress', despite being playable at the beginning of the game.
