Mudkip is one of the three starter Pokémon offered in the third generation Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions.

Information

Midkip is a small amphibious Pokémon. The fin atop its head acts as a highly sensitive radar which senses movements of air and water, allowing it to determine what is going on around it without using its eyes. Mudkip has gills on its cheek for breathing underwater, and its large tail fin propels it through water with great acceleration. Mudkip is also known for being unusually strong for its size, being capable of crushing rocks bigger than itself and of lifting boulders by planting its four feet and heaving. They sleep by burying themselves in soil at the water's edge.

Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at Level 16.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

Mudkip initially appeared in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald as one of the three starter Pokémon offered to Brendan/May by Professor Birch. The same three Pokémon are offered to the player of HeartGold and SoulSilver by Steven Stone after the player defeats Red at Mt. Silver.

Other Games

In Pokémon Channel, Mudkip can be found at Camp Starlight on any cloudy or clear night and at Springleaf Field at any time of day during rainy weather. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Mudkip can be caught at the Lake in the Sapphire Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, Mudkip can be found at Huge Storage 3, Endless Level 17, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.

Mudkip is also one of the possible starter Pokémon that the player transforms into at the beginning of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams as well as in the sequel Explorers of Darkness and Time. In Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Mudkip can also be found in the first three flights of Waterfall Pond, while in the sequel they can also be found in the first twenty-four basement flights of End Lake. In Pokémon Ranger, Mudkip can be found in the Lyra Forest.

Other Appearances

  • Mudkip have made several minor appearances in the Pokémon anime, and at one point in the Hoenn episodes Brock liked one baby Mudkip enough to catch it. It later evolved.
  • In the Ruby/Sapphire arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mudkip wound up being Ruby's starter Pokémon. He was initially disappointed in it due to its ugly appearance and his obsession with Pokémon Contests, but eventually found that Mudkip was perfectly suited for the Tough contest. It evolves as the arc continued.

Trivia

  • Its name seems to be a play on "mudskipper" (a real-life amphibious fish).
  • Mudkip appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
