Raticate is a rat-like Pokémon from the first generation games which is the evolved form of Rattata.

Information

Raticate evolves from Rattata at Level 20. It is larger and fatter, as well as having a different fur color. Raticate can stand on their hind legs, with their whiskers allowing them to keep balance. They will slow down if these whiskers are cut off. They also have webbed feet with three toes each, which allows it to swim through rivers and hunt for food. Raticate search wide areas for food.

They are also known for their deadly fangs. They gnaw on anything can can even topple over concrete buildings. Their fangs never stop growing, so like Rattata, they often chew on things such as rocks or logs, or even cinder walls, to pare them down. Raticate are commonly used by Team Rocket members due to their rat-like nature.

In Pokémon: Red and Blue, Raticate can be commonly found at Routes 16, 17, 18 and 21. In Yellow, they are found at Routes 9, 10, 11, 16, 18 and 21 as well as in the Pokémon Mansion. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they are only found at Routes 16, 17 and 18 and the Pokémon Mansion and are uncommon.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Raticate are uncommonly found at Routes 7, 9, 10, 26, 27, 38 and 39 as well as in Union Cave and Burned Tower. In Crystal, they additionally appeared at Routes 1, 3, 4, 6, 11, 21, 42 and 43 as well as Mt. Mortar and Tohjo Falls. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they still appear at Mt. Mortar and Tohjo Falls in addition to also appearing at Route 47.

In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Raticate appear at Routes 225 and 226.

Other Games

Raticate could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball, and it also made appearances in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2 and Pokémon Colosseum. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Raticate could be snagged from an enemy at Citadark Isle. After being purified, this Raticate could be traded to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Trozei, Raticate appeared at Endless Level 16, Endless Level 42, Forever Level 1 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could only be obtained through evolution, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it showed up at the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest, the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle and the first twenty-one basement floors of Midnight Forest.

In Pokémon Ranger, Raticate could be found at Waterworks, while in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia it appeared at Pueltown. In Pokémon Rumble, it appeared at Windy Prairie.

• Within the Pokémon anime, Raticate are sometimes seen in the possession of Team Rocket grunts, and they also appear as the main Pokémon of the Rocket agents Cassidy, and it has a part of their Team Rocket motto, making it their counterpart to Jessie and James's Meowth (although of course it cannot speak). Additionally, one episode within the first series had Ash trading his Butterfree to a stranger on the SS Anne for a Raticate, but he soon regretted the trade and had it undone.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Yellow's Rattata evolved into a Raticate during the final battles of the Yellow arc and have remained as a regular member of her team since.

Trivia

• Raticate's name is a combination of "rat" and either "eradicate", "exterminate" or "masticate" (in reference to its teeth).
• It was originally called the Rat Pokémon, but this classification was changed to Mouse in the third generation games.
