Debut Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi

Abel is a playable unit appearing in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryuu to Hikari no Tsurugi as well as the remakes Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon. He and Cain are the first playable Cavaliers in the game (and the series as a whole).

Background

Abel was a loyal member of the Altean knights who had the nickname of "Black Panther". He and fellow knight Cain were companions as well as rivals.

Book One

When Altea was invaded by allies of the Dolhr Empire, Abel and Frey were assigned to escort Marth to safety and to find Jagen in the second part of Shadow Dragon's prologue. Afterwards, Abel remained a loyal member of the Altean army for the remainder of Marth's campaign. After the War of Darkness ended, Abel retired from the life of a knight and opened up a shop. At the same time, he formed a secret romance with Est. There were rumors of marriage, but it was said that his knights remained his most steadfast companions.

Book Two

Three years later, Abel went into action again with Est in order to help protect Altea when it was invaded by Hardin's Archanean army. However, Est was eventually captured by the enemy, and they used her as a hostage to make Abel fight against Marth's men in Chapter 15. However, Abel would switch sides if he talked to Marth, due to not being able to bring himself to fight him, or Est if she was freed from captivity. After the war ended, Est left Abel for unspecified reasons and disappeared, and Abel left the country in an attempt to find her (if Est had died, he instead left due to being saddened by her death). He was never seen again.

Other Appearances

  • Abel appears in both episodes of the Fire Emblem OVA, where he is shown to have a somewhat calmer personality to contrast Cain's.

Trivia

  • He and Cain act as the green and red knights of Ankoku no Ryuu, Monshou no Nazo and Shadow Dragon, and thus act as the first example of that archetype in the series; Abel specializes in skill and speed while Cain specializes in strength and defense.
  • Cain and Abel's names come from the biblical story of Cain and Abel, two brothers who were the first children to be born to Adam and Eve, who were in turn the first people created. They have little more in common with their namesakes besides their names and brotherly friendship, as in the Bible Cain eventually betrays and kills Abel out of jealousy.
  • In Monshou no Nazo, he receives Support Bonuses from Est while in Shadow Dragon, he receives Support Bonuses from Marth, Est, Palla and Cain.
