Torchic is a small flame-producing bird Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games as one of the three starter Pokémon of Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Versions. It is the first in a three-stage evolutionary line, with its evolved forms being Combusken and Blaziken.

Information

Torchic is a small bird that has flames stored in a flame sac that is always burning within its body. It is covered by a fluffy coat of down and is warm to hug. If attacked, it will spit balls of fire that are formed within its stomach. It breathes fire of over 1,800 degrees F, and its fireballs often leave opponents scorched black. They dislike darkness due to not being able to see their surroundings and will stick with their trainer despite following with unsteady steps.

It evolves into Combusken at Level 16.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Torchic is one of the three starter Pokémon offered by Professor Birch at the beginning of the game. Additionally in HeartGold and SoulSilver, Steven Stone will give the player one of the Hoenn starters when they meet him at Silph Co. after defeating Red, depending on which color of stone the player prefers (with Torchic corresponding with red). It can also be found at the Sightseeing route of the Pokéwalker, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver'.

Other Games

In Pokémon Channel, Torchic could be found at Camp Starlight on clear or cloudy nights and at Springleaf Field on cloudy mornings, clear days and cloudy evenings. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, it appeared at the Volcano area of the Ruby Field. In Pokémon Trozei!, Torchic could be found at Huge Storage 2, Endless Level 14, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams as well as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Torchic was one of the starter Pokémon whom the player could be transformed into at the beginning of the game depending on their personality. Recruitable Torchic could also be found on the eleventh through fifteenth floors of Joyous Tower in the former games, and on the first ten floors of Giant Volcano as well as the first fourteen basement floors of Dark Crater in the latter games. In Pokémon Ranger, Torchic appeared in the Lyra Forest, and in [[Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs], it was found at Faldera Volcano, the Forest Temple and Odd Temple. Torchic also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure where it was befriended at the Lava Zone and also appeared at the Meeting Place.

Other Appearances

Video Games

  • Torchic appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Torchic surrounds itself with a flaming aura that burns anyone nearby. A trophy and sticker of it are also available in the game.

Other Media

  • Torchic appeared in the Pokémon anime during its Hoenn season as May's starter Pokémon. It was initially absent-minded and somewhat cowardly, but after May began paying more attention to her Beautifly, it became more determined and competitive until it evolved into Combusken. Other Torchic have also made occasional appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Torchic was Sapphire's starter Pokémon during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, and it evolved into Combusken during her battle with Brawly.

Trivia

  • Its name is simply a combination of "torch" and "chick".
  • Ironically, despite being a bird, it is a pure fire type and becomes a Fightning instead of Fire type as it evolves.
  • Due to it being catchable through the Pokéwalker, it is the only starter Pokémon that could be also caught in the wild for the mainstream color versions.
