Debut The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Smith is the grandfather of Link appearing in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

Background

In his youth, Smith was a great swordsman and had a rivalry with King Daltus. The two of them once fought to a draw during the Picori Festival's tournament. Once he grew older, Smith retired to become a blacksmith and lived with his grandson Link, who ofteh helped him with his work. Smith and Link resided in a two-story house at South Hyrule Field, which was not far from Hyrule Village and Hyrule Castle. This and Smith's connection to Daltus led to Link forming his own close friendship with Daltus's daughter, Princess Zelda. Although he was no longer a competitor, Smith still forged the swords that were given as prizes at the Picori Festival. He was well-respected as Hyrule's greatest blacksmith.

In The Minish Cap, Smith disapproved of Princess Zelda sneaking out of the castle to see them, but he decided to have Link escort her back to Hyrule Castle and at the same time deliver the sword which he had made for the festival. He came to the castle after Vaati's attack, which had resulted in Zelda being petrified while Link was knocked out. Smith attended a meeting at Link's bed with Daltus and Potho. When they discussed the Minish, Smith suggested sending Link to meet them after he learned that they appeared before children. Link was entrusted with the sword that Smith had made, and Smith also gave him a map to set him off on his journey. Afterwards, Smith remained at home and became busy forging more swords for Hyrule's soldiers to use for fending off the monsters. He also have Link any suggestions or advice that he could think of whenever he stopped by.

Trivia

  • He is the first older relative of Link to appear who is officially named.
  • One of Swiftblade's gossip columns implies that he is also an old friend of Smith's, which makes sense given their similar ages and shared interests in swordfighting.
