Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game starring various Nintendo supertsars. At the time, there wasn't anything like it. It's easy to pick up and play, but tough to master. Besides the gameplay itself, the game is full of references to Nintendo's greatest games.
Story
Master Hand got bored one day and decided to have his favorite Nintendo characters duke it out.
Playable Characters
- Mario (from the Mario series)
- Pikachu (from the Pokemon series)
- Ness (from EarthBound) (secret)
- Yoshi (from the Mario and Yoshi series)
- Link (from the Legend of Zelda series)
- Fox McCloud (from the Star Fox series)
- Samus Aran (from the Metroid series)
- Kirby (from the Kirby series)
- Captain Falcon (from the F-Zero series) (secret)
- Donkey Kong (from the Donkey Kong series)
- Luigi (from the Mario series)
- Jigglypuff (from the Pokemon series)
Gameplay
Though every character fights differently, they have the same basic control scheme. The A button will let you use regular attacks while the B button and a direction will unleash a special attack. The C^ button can make your character jump. Pressing the Z button will allow you to throw a character if there's a character nearby; if there's no one nearby, you will use your shield.
The 1 Player mode has the player fighting a series of individual battles against the other characters in the game. For variety, there are other types of battles such as Metal Mario, Fighting Polygon Team, and Giant Donkey Kong. Along with the battles, there are also three bonus games: Break the Targets, Board the Platform, and Race to the Finish. At the end, the player must battle Master Hand.
The true heart of the game, however, is the multiplayer. Super Smash Bros. can be played by up to four players simultaneously. It supports a variety of different play modes including time, stock, and team options.
Legacy
Super Smash Bros. had become the first in a series of three games. I imagine that we'll see more of it's legacy as time goes on.
Sequels
Super Smash Bros. Melee, the sequel to Super Smash Bros., improves on the original in several ways. There are more characters, more items, new modes of play, and the new trophy feature.
