Darmani the Third is a noble Goron hero who dies before the events of Majora's Mask. His spirit is transformed into a mask, allowing Link to become a Goron.

Background

Known as the 'hero of the Gorons', Darmani was a famous Goron that all of the other gorons looked up to and respected. When a evil creeature invaded Snowhead, Darmani went to investigate. However the powerful winds in the area (which were produced a the giant invisible Goron) caused him to fall off the cliffs to his death.

Ashamed and defeated, Darmani ended up haunting the Goron Village until he met the owl, Kaepora Gaebora. The owl had recently met Link at the Southern Swamp and assured Darmani that someone with powerful magic would help him. After Link retrieved the Lens of Truth, he found that Darmani had been watching him. Surprised that anyone could see him, Darmani bid Link to follow him 'if he truly could see him'. From there, he led Link to his tomb above the Mountain Village.

Darmani then spoke to Link and explained what had happened. He asked Link to use his 'magic' to either bring him back to life or to just heal him of his sorrows. Since Link could not do the former, he instead played the 'Song of Healing'. The resulting song melted away Darmani's sorrows, and he saw a vision of himself being cheered on by all the gorons. Then he saw Link and dutifully decided to give his power to him in the form of the Goron Mask.

Wearing the Goron Mask, Link turned into a goron that looked like Darmani, just with a green hat and loincloth. All the other Gorons (except the Goron Elder, who initially thought he was just a ghost or illusion) believed him to actually be Darmani and treated him as such. As 'Darmani', Link defeated Goht in Snowhead Temple and brought peace back to the gorons. As a result, Darmani was again considered the hero of the gorons. There were still some complications that arose from Darmani's believed resurrection, as the Goron Elder decided to pass on the title of patriarch to him.

Trivia

• Darmani is likely the Terminian counterpart of Darunia.
• In Breath of the Wild, there is a lava lake on Death Mountain named Lake Darman in reference to him.
• In Hyrule Warriors, one of Darunia's alternate outfits is Darmani's appearance, referred to as "Standard Outfit (Master Quest)". Additionally, Darmani's necklace (referred to as Snowhead Necklace) appears with two different variations as Fairy Clothing accessories for Companion Fairies.
