Dieck is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi. He leads a band of mercenaries.

Background

As a young man, Dieck fought in the pit fights of Castle Reglay. One day Klein, the son of Lord Pent was attacked by one of the lions used at the arena. Dieck put himself in harm's way to protect the young noble, but suffered four deep scars across his body as a result of the battle. Grateful for his efforts, Lord Pent took Dieck in and made him practically a member of the family. He guarded Klein, who looked up to him as a brother, and competed in the arena where he made a name for himself. However other nobles disapproved of Dieck's place and eventually he bought his freedom and left.

He became a mercenary and eventually assembled other mercenaries under his command. During one mission he was hired to go deep into the enemy lines in Bern. His squad was supposed to attack the enemy leader and claim victory, but instead they were assaulted by arrows. His use had been to allow his employer to escape. He was the only survivor and was tortured. He managed to escape somehow, but the experience left him jaded of his employers and very protective of his men. He eventually assembled a small squad of mercenaries composed of Ward, Lott, and Thany.

Prior to the outbreak of the war with Bern, Dieck was hired by Lord Eliwood to provide support for his son, Roy who was joining the Lycia Alliance. Dieck and his band found Roy already engaged in a battle with Lord Rude, prompting Dieck and his men to go ahead and provide their aid. Afterwards he and his band continued to provide their aid to Roy. Later in the war he would even meet up with an older Klein and his younger sister, Clarine.

After the war, he broke up his band of mercenaries and set out to travel on his own. He continued to participate in different battles where his reputation made him fearsome. One of the many legends says that a legion of enemies fled after seeing him appear on the battlefield.

Support Conversation Summaries

Dieck is capable of having support conversations with six other characters.

  • Ward- Dieck chastises Ward for being reckless in battle and urges him to not go all out. Later Ward brags about taking three enemies in one swing and forgot what Dieck told him. Although Dieck tries to remind him, Ward seems oblivious. In the final conversation, Ward apologizes and confesses he almost go himself killed. Dieck praises him for realizing that and reminds him that he can be powerful without rushing into battle.
  • Lott- The two talk about Roy. Lott thinks Roy is a good person, but Dieck says the battles are easy and they'll see Roy's true mettle when it's a battle of life or death. Later when the two talk, Dieck explains that he was one betrayed by an employer and that to them, mercenaries are just disposable. In their final conversation, Dieck says that Roy is the kind of person he can fight and die for his purpose and have no regrets.
  • Thany- Thany starts by calling Dieck "Captain", but he insists on her doing otherwise. She tries to call him "Bro" like Lott and Ward, but he again insists on just Dieck. In the next conversation, Dieck comments that Thany fights on her own and she should set her pace with the others to ensure victory. In the final conversation Thany states she's been following his advice, but Dieck then says that she shouldn't rely on them too much and that a mercenary can't rely on others. However she says that she knows she can rely on him and that Lott and Dieck do too.
  • Clarine- In the first conversation, Clarine tries to heal Dieck, who is less than patient with her. She admonishes her by saying her name and he immediately recognizes her as the daughter of Pent and sister of Klein, but he doesn't introduce himself. In the next conversation she tries to get his name, but he insists she is just boy chasing and that he doesn't approve. In the final conversation he gives in and reveals himself as Dieck and how he was once a pitfighter for their family. He then asks her to leave him alone, but she says she will follow him everywhere because she wants to hear about her brother when he was young.
  • Klein- General Klein speaks to Dieck because the mercenary doesn't seem to recognize him. Dieck is surprised Klein remembers him and the two reminisce on the past. In the following conversation, Dieck insists Klein not stay close to the front lines. Klein insists he is now a general, but Dieck explains that he wouldn't be able to explain what happened if Klein was to be hurt. In the final conversation, Klein tells Dieck of their past together and adds that he had felt betrayed when Dieck had just left. Dieck admits he had been selfish and that he'll show himself to Lord Pent again some time.
  • Rutgar- Rutgar surprises Dieck with an attack, but Dieck dodges the blow. Dieck notes that they were once enemies trying to kill eachother, but now they're both allies and shouldn't be fighting. However Rutgar insists he will be the first to land a blow on Gerick's back. In the next support Dieck finds Rutgar watching him intently. Rutgar eventually tells him that he saw Gerick kill a soldier in the Bern army that was the soldier who had led the attack on his hometown. Dieck apologizes, but Rutgar says that enemies don't belong to anyone. In the final conversation Rutgar explains about how his village was attacked. He was left alive because he didn't look Sacaen, despite himself being half Sacaen. Upon hearing this, Dieck agrees to go with Rutgar in taking on Bern.
