Characters in Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland
This is a list of all the characters who appear in Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.
Main Characters
Tingle
- Tingle is the main protagonist of the game. In the beginning he is named by the player, though he is soon after renamed by Uncle Rupee. He's not much of a fighter, but he's able to cook up recipes, map important locations, and hire bodyguards for protection.
Uncle Rupee
- Uncle Rupee is a mysterious old man who convinces Tingle to collect Rupees so he can enter into Rupeeland. Throughout the game, he changes into more elaborate costumes as Tingle collects rupees. At the end of the game, he turns on Tingle and the two battle on the surface of the moon.
Pinkle
- Pinkle is the daughter of the Great Fairy. She was captured by Uncle Rupee and transformed into a human so she would work in a small room in the Auros Ruins working on a terminal to guide Uncle Rupee's servants in finding more Rupees.
Barkle
- Barkle is a little dog that Tingle first encounters on Cape Treasure. After Tingle sells the dog a few bones, Barkle takes off on his own. Later when Tingle first meets the Stalfos pirates, Barkle scares off the pirates (who are afraid of dogs chewing on their bones) and somehow makes it to their hideout. His presence has the pirates all in an uproar and only Tingle was able to 'scare him away'. Later Barkle found his way back to the Hometown Prairie. He made his own stop at the Western Pool and was given a Tingle outfit. He then settled in Tingle's house where he would find Rupees for Tingle whenever he was given enough bones.
Port Town Characters
The Guard
- The Guard is a loyal soldier who guards the entrance of Port Town from intruders. However like most citizens of the town, he has a bit of a greedy streak in him and won't let Tingle in unless he pays a fee of 5 Rupees to get in. Later when his wife becomes ill, he purchases medicine from Tingle. He afterwards begins selling jars to Tingle until his wife is suddenly plagued by ghosts.
He catches a ride to the Icy Plain to find the source of the ghosts. He is at first too afraid to go in, so Tingle has to push him all the way to the graveyard. He then soldiers on to face the ghost, but her power is so great that she kills him in one bolt. To bring him back to life, Tingle has Chiko's deceased grandmother disguise herself as the Guard's wife and she convinces him to return to life. The guard's fury becomes so great that the ghost is unable to scratch him. The ghost then admits she was jealous of the guard's affections for his wife, so she releases her. Afterwards the Guard returns to his post, but not before giving Tingle ample reward for his help.
Bella
- Bella owns a cafe near the entrance of Port Town. She doesn't negotiate with Tingle until he appeases her with 36 Rupees, but afterwards she starts to buy ingredients from him. Once Tingle encounters the Journalist, Bella will sell the Simple Juice recipe so Tingle can revive him. Because of the Journalist's frequent explorations, Tingle inevitably has to buy two other juice recipes from her.
The Journalist
- The Journalist is an eccentric writer who enjoys drinking juice as Bella's cafe in Port Town. He often likes to travel abroad, though the traveling tends to prove too much for him and he'll end up passed out in the middle of nowhere. TIngle finds him in this state in the game three different times and has to provide him with Bella's special juice recipes to revive him. He'll then reward Tingle before heading back to town. An odd quirk is that he always speaks in first person as his own narrator.
The Jeweler
- The Jeweler is a wealthy merchant who buys precious stones and other valuables. He'll only talk to Tingle once paid 27 Rupees, but afterwards will gladly do business with him. When his daughter goes wandering off into Lon Lon Meadow, he becomes worried for her safety. But when Tingle finds her and brings her back to town, the Jeweler provides Tingle with a large reward before returning to business.
Madame Scratchcard
- The Jeweler's wife is a very environmentally concerned person, especially in regard to particular triangles that end up buried which are very bad for the environment. In order to encourage these items be picked up, she runs a scratch-off contest where people can win Rupees in exchange for giving her the triangles.
The Chef
- The Chef owns his own restaurant in town, though he's not quite that successful. He won't do business with Tingle until he is paid 10 Rupees, but afterwards he'll buy certain ingredients. Later his wife gets frustrated with his lack of skill and begins selling Tingle his large cooking pots. The Chef doubts Tingle's skill and challenges him to make some of his recipe specialties. When Tingle succeeds in cooking these recipes, the Chef eagerly buys them to resell in his own restaurant. He has two children, Dave and "Big Bro".
The Waitress
- The wife of the Chef, she is frustrated with his inability to appease the customer. Fed up with him, she appears twice to sell off his large cooking pots to Tingle. She sells the first for 500 and then later the largest one for 1500 Rupees.
The Armorer
- A lover of weapons, the Armorer will buy whatever weapon is offered to him. He won't do business with Tingle unless he pays 15 Rupees, but afterwards he becomes one of the first vendors to buy one of Tingle's recipes. He also knows a lot about the Oinkers and Stalfos Pirates. Later Tingle finds his long lost daughter, Aba, who had been raised by Junglo in the Deku Forest. The Armorer travels to the forest to meet her. The two tend to fight and argue a lot, but they seem to be generally attached to one another.
Chiko's Mother
- Chiko's Mother is the seamstress of the town. After Tingle finds Chiko's doll, she rewards Tingle for his efforts and will afterwards buy fabrics or clothing from him. She also helps to repair a robe for a Salona after it is torn. When Tingle awakens the fairy in Port Town, she rewards Tingle since the fairy tells Chiko to behave. She has a mother buried in the Snow Fields and was supposed to pour "Endless Love", a type of perfume on her grave, but never quite got around to making the trip.
Map-Seller
- The Map-Seller is an old lady whose husband passed away before they could map the world. She is unable to do it herself, but when she meets up with Tingle, she provides him with a map of Hometown Prairie and agrees to pay him for every landmark he adds to a map. She continues to do this for other maps that Tingle acquires. Whenever Tingle would complete a map, she would buy the entire map back and then start selling it in her shop for a marked up price. After she sells every single map, she gives Tingle the Master Pen. She then passes away, with her ghost telling Tingle that she's doing to go visit her husband.
Old Gent
- Although not from Port Town originally, he arrives in Port Town after Tingle helps to recover all the lost pieces from the airship when he and the rich boy crash in the Snow Fields. He is actually the servant of the rich boy and is with him on vacation to handle his finances. After arriving in Port Town, he pays Tingle to collect all of the toys the rich boy accidentally dropped out of the airship while they were flying.
Children of Port Town
Chiko
- Chiko is the daughter of the local seamstress. She's in love with fairies and always carries around a fairy doll with her. She first meets Tingle after losing her toy in the Hometown Prairie, but when Tingle finds it for her, she leads him to the dungeon underneath the Hero's Statue. Later she witnesses Tingle revive the fairy in Port Town. After the fairy greets her and gives her a message to behave, she passes on her Fairy Doll to Tingle, but remarks that the fairy wasn't as powerful as she expected. One of the Rupee Goods is a Human Doll shaped like Chiko, which is said to have been made for a fairy child by its mother as a parallel to Chiko's Fairy Doll.
Missy
- Missy is the daughter of the Jeweler. She has a keen interest in medicine and devises her own medicine recipe, the Tingly, which she passes on to Tingle with explicit instructions that it not be used for profit. She later gets lost in Lon Lon Meadows after losing her glasses, but Tingle is able to find her and bring her back home. She later talks about her idol, the medic from the exploration teams, as well as talking about the shaman from Mount Desma.
Dave
- Dave is the son of the Chef and his girth shows it. He likes to pretend he's a Oinker and wears a fake Oinker snout on his face. He absolutely loves Sweet Potatoes though. He ends up trading his Oinker snout for a Sweet Potato, which allowed Tingle to enter Oinker hideouts. Dave is always keeping tabs on his sibling, Big Bro, and seems to realize that his brother is just a bit odd.
Big Bro
- Big Bro is the other son of the chef and presumably the older brother of Dave (despite being much smaller). He's a rather quiet kid who tends to mumble to himself bout unusual things. At different points in the game, he takes off to different spots on the First Continent to bury jars with secret messages inside. However Tingle interrupts him on each dig and in a burst of embarrassment, he gives Tingle the jars and takes off back to Port Town.
Aba
- Aba is the daughter of the Armorer. Her mother couldn't stand his obsession with weapons, so she left him with their child. They got lost in Deku Forest and Aba was found by Junglo after her mother had already died. Jungle raised Aba as his own daughter, but never told her that she was adopted. Aba would often leave the forest and met Tingle in the Hometown Prairies where she gave him combat advice. Later she overhears Jungle telling Tingle about her origin. Tingle finds her real father, the Armorer, and the two reunite. Although angry at first at Jungle, she forgives him before she returns to Port Town. She and her father fight alot, but they seem to like eachother.
Paul
- A rich child who hails from lands unknown and isn't actually from Port Town. He and his servant, the Old Gent, accidentally crashed into the Snow Fields. Although the boy thought it mad for a great vacation, the Old Gent secretly paid Tingle to look for all the ship parts to their airship. Later they travel to Port Town, but Paul drops three of his toys while taking in the sights on the way there. In town he tries to impress the local kids with his wealth, but discovers that the kids just like to play and aren't concerned about money.
Stalfos Pirates
A group of pirates that Tingle meets in Cape Treasure who are recurring characters in the game. Although never explicitly stated, it is very possible they are the same set of Stalfos Pirates from The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons.
Captain Stalfos
- The captain of the Stalfos is much larger than his crew. The fact of the matter is that he is empowered by a Super Rupee that gives him great strength. He tends to remain back at the pirate base and allows his second in command to handle most duties. When Tingle tried to join the pirate crew, Captain Stalfos was willing to let him be a pirate... but only after performing the ceremony to sear Tingle's flesh from his body. Since Tingle wasn't willing to do that, Tingle fought back in a battle reminiscent of Punch-Out!!.
After Captain Stalfos was shattered into bones, he was placed into a pot. He was never quite put together after that, but he did allow the pirates to work with Tingle from time to time. Later his head is possessed by the Death Bug's offspring and Tingle has to use bombs to shake off the monsters. As a reward for Tingle's efforts, he upgrades Tingle's Bone Ocarina so he can dig up all the treasure that the pirates have buried.
First Mate
- The First Mate is a Stalfos pirate who is usually the leader of the pirates in most affairs. He dresses in blue to differentiate himself from the other pirates and is generally a lot braver than the other cowardly pirates, though he shares their fear of dogs. When Tingle tried to become a member, he was willing to allow it at first, but only with the captain's approval. Although Tingle wasn't able to become a member, he allowed Tingle to trade with their merchant and to visit their hideout whenever he wanted to.
Later on he hired Teddy Todo to check out the Insect Cavern for them. Although Teddy and Tingle beat the Death at the source of the cavern, the monster's offspring escaped to possess the pirate crew. The First Mate was among the few not to be possessed and worked with Tingle to help defeat all of the Death Bug spawn.
Engineer
- The Engineer is one of the pirates who is an expert with explosives. He wears a pair of glasses and generally stays on the ship in his own quarters working on his experiments. When the hideout was 'attacked' by Barkle, he hid in a closet and could only be coaxed out by Tingle after being called on three times. After the crisis was over, he gave Tingle the recipe to create Tingle Bombs. Later on he developed the Nitro Bomb, a recipe he gave to Tingle after the Death Bugs were killed.
The Merchant
- The Merchant isn't a pirate or a Stalfos. He was hired by the First Mate to do business at the various ports that the pirates dock at. The Merchant's prime interest is in food recipes - specifically local recipes. It's his aim to have collected them all. For each one Tingle sells him, he awards Tingle an Empty Bottle. Once Tingle has sold one of every Local Recipe, he awards him with one of the Rupee Goods - the Merchant Fan.
Although not present in the European version, he appears to have an actual name in the Japanese version of the game - Mr. Akindo.
Bridge Builders
In the three continents, a different builder is encountered on each continent. Tingle can pay them to build bridges to previous islands that he's visited, though they can't connect continents together. Their rate increases as the game continues, but at the end they refund everything back (with interest) to Tingle. Their design appears to be based off Masaki Sumitani (or "Hard Gay"), a Japanese comedian.
Duke
- Duke is the youngest of three bridge-builders and the son of the famous Foreman. It's his goal to build more bridges than his other siblings so he can earn the favor of his father. He is found on the first continent and builds the most bridges in the game. At the end he builds a bridge to the Foreman at the same time as his siblings. However the Foreman expresses disappointment at the greed of his kids and makes Duke refund all the money back.
Judge
- Judge is the middle child of three bridge-builders and the son of the famous Foreman. It's his goal to build more bridges than his other siblings so he can earn the favor of his father. He is found on the second continent and besides connecting islands, also builds a bridge needed to reach a light tower to open up the Insect Cavern (the only bridge to not be optional). At the end he builds a bridge to the Foreman at the same time as his siblings. However the Foreman expresses disappointment at the greed of his kids and makes Judge refund all the money back.
Duko
- Duko is the oldest child of three bridge-builders and despite her appearance, is the daughter of the famous Foreman. It's her goal to build more bridges than her other siblings so she can earn the favor of her father. She is found on the third continent and builds two subterranean bridges that connects the Fairy Desert to Tauros Ruins and Mount Desma. At the end she builds a bridge to the Foreman at the same time as her siblings. However the Foreman expresses disappointment at the greed of his kids and makes Duko refund all the money back.
The Foreman
- The Foreman is the father of three children who all strive to be as skilled as he is. However they don't build bridges on their own initiative, but rather all forced Tingle to 'fund' the bridge building process. When the Foreman finds out about this, he makes his kids all refund the money back to Tingle. He also gives Tingle the Pickaxe, a Rupee Good as way of apology for the deeds of his kids.
