Darmanitan is a flaming ape-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fifth generation games. It is the evolved form of Darumaka and is unique for its Zen Mode.
Information
Darmanitan evolves from Darumaka at Level 35. It has an internal fire which burns at a temperature of 2500 degrees Fahrenheit, making it strong enough to destroy a dump truck with one punch. However, some Darmanitan are gifted with the Zen Mode ability, which gives them a special edge in battle. These Darmanitan transform into Zen Mode after losing half their health, at which point they resemble stone statues. This sharpens its mind and allows it to attack mentally with Psychic abilities. It is known that they can hibernate (or possibly just meditate) for thousands of years in this form.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, five Darmanitan appear in the Desert Resort outside the Relic Castle frozen in Zen Mode. When returning to the area after defeating Team Plasma, Professor Juniper will explain the condition of the Darmanitan to the player and provide a RageCandyBar that can awaken it. Each of the five Darmanitan could be awakened in their normal forms by a RageCandyBar, at which point it will engage the player in battle and can be defeated or captured. According to Juniper, they had been resting their for 2500 years, around the time that a great civilization was flourishing in that area.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime, Darmanitan was featured in one episode in which one Darmanitan remained in Zen Mode to keep a bell in the clock tower from falling by using psychic powers. Two Darumaka stole food to help it retain its energy. They eventually work with Ash's group to repair the bell and afterwards are able to live peacefully in the clock tower.
Trivia
- Darmanitan's name is a combination of "Daruma" and "orangutan". This is because, like Darumaka, Darmanitan was based on the Daruma doll, and it takes the analogy further in that the Zen Mode resembles a Daruma doll. Darmanitan's resemblance to the gorilla is because the Bodhidharma who was depicted in the Daruma dolls was said to resemble a gorilla.
