Gustaf
Species Hylian
Debut The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap

Gustaf was a past king of Hyule who appeared in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap.

Background

Gustaf was a king who ruled over Hyrule "countless ages" before the time of The Minish Cap. Little was known about his life beyond his fondness for the people of the Wind Tribe. Upon his death, he was interred at the Royal Crypt within the Royal Valley. However, his spirit still lingered on and sought to secure Hyrule's peace.

During The Minish Cap, his spirit appeared before Link and Ezlo upon their completion of the Temple of Droplets. He briefly introduced himself and left a mark on Link's map to indicate the location of the Royal Crypt. Link and Ezlo found their way to there and met with Gustaf's spirit again at his chamber within the Royal Crypt. There, he granted Link a Kinstone and advised him to seek "the source of the flow in Hyrule" to open his path forward. This referred to part of the Veil Falls that connected to the Cloud Tops where the Wind Tribe resided. Before departing, Gustaf asked Link to save Zelda and told him that all of Hyrule was counting on him.

Other Appearances

Other Media

  • Gustaf appeared in the manga adaptation of The Minish Cap, where his role was similar, but his backstory was expanded upon. It is said that he made contact with the Wind Tribe for their agricultural knowledge, which he used alongside control of the light force to bring prosperity to Hyrule until he was assassinated by a power-hungry aide who sought the light force for himself. However, through his will he instead granted it to the Wind Tribe.

Trivia

  • Following the official timeline from the Hyrule Historia, he is the earliest known king of Hyrule.
  • In Breath of the Wild, a small mountain in Hyrule field is named Mount Gustaf in reference to him.
