Arrghus

Arrrghus (alternately known as Wart in the English localization of Majora's Mask) is a recurring boss enemy from the The Legend of Zelda series.

Information

Arrghus is a large one-eyed creature that most often resembles a jellyfish. Its eye is its weak point, but it is surrounded by smaller beings that act as shields. The smaller beings differ from game to game. In its original appearance, they are small puffy entities known as Arrgi. In Majora's Mask, they are blobby bubbles. In A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes, they are giant eyeballs encased within blobs.

In any case, the method of fighting Arrghus is usually similar. Link usually has to use a Hookshot or similar item to reel in the entities surrounding Arrghus and destroy them in order to attack Arrghus itself. In most appearances, Arrghus floats around aimlessly at first, but after its entities are destroyed, it begins moving around quickly in a last-ditch effort to destroy Link. It also shoots lasers in some appearances.

Appearances

Arrghus originally appeared in A Link to the Past as the boss of the Swamp Palace and guarded one of the maidens who were trapped in crystals. In the GBA remake, a stronger version of Arrghus appeared as one of the minibosses faced within the Palace of the Four Sword. That Arrghus was surrounded by electrified Bari instead, and it also summoned swarms of Kyameron during the final phase of its battle.

In Majora's Mask, Arrghus was a miniboss faced at the Great Bay Temple and also within the Secret Shrine. This marked Arrghus's only appearance in a 3-D game. Arrghus also appeared in A Link Between Worlds, where it once again acted as the boss of the Swamp Palace and had a similar attack pattern as in A Link to the Past. It also appeared in Tri Force Heroes as the boss of the Water Temple and the overall boss of the Riverside area. In this appearance, it also displayed the ability to fire out ink that could temporarily prevent Links from using their weapons.

Trivia

• Its Japanese name is Waato, or Wart. Wart was used as its English name in Majora's Mask, most likely due to a mistake,
• Its English name, Arrghus, may be a reference to Argus Paoptes, a giant from Greek mythology who is known for having many eyes.
