Super Macho Man is a recurring enemy from the Punch-Out!! series, usually appearing as one of the final opponents or the final opponent. He is most well known for his habit of flexing his pecs (as well as his butt cheeks in the Wii game).
Background
Super Macho Man was a vain boxer hailing from Los Angeles and usually spoke using surferish lingo. There he lived a very glitzy lifestyle filled with tanning and women fawning over him. Unlike others (such as Bald Bull), he embraced this popularity and the boost it provided to his already-high self-esteem. However, he had little respect for the people around him, as shown in his shoving the referee out of his way when returning to a match and his getting mad at the paparazzi for touching the ropes. He hated getting hurt in battle, but he believed that "trashing wimps" made the battles worthwhile. However, he was still a skilled boxer and would spend his time training on the beach in Venice. His moves consist of powerful uppercuts that can usually be easily dodged, as well as his Super Spin Punch and some hooks which were harder to avoid.
He first appeared in Super Punch-Out!! for the arcade, as the fifth and final opponent, and ranked champion of the world. In this game his spin punch is called the Macho Punch and is very powerful, only being avoided through ducking. He then appears in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, where he is the champion of the World Circuit as well as the final opponent before the Dream Fight with Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream (and in the Japanese version, which lacks the dream fight, he is the final opponent). His spin punches are somewhat easier to avoid in this version, but he is still known as a considerably tough opponent.
Super Macho Man returns in Super Punch-Out!! for the Super Nintendo as the champion of the World Circuit. In this game he incorporates exercise programs of successive uppercuts into his routine, but he is easier to defeat than in other games. He also appears in Punch-Out!! for the Wii, where he is the #1 ranked fighter of the World Circuit and specializes in moves that are hard to dodge, including his patented spin punch. After losing to Little Mac, he loses his place in the spotlight with the paparazzi and the women, which leads him to become jealous of Little Mac and return seeking revenge in Title Defense Mode, where his spin punches are faster.
Trivia
- His place of origin is somewhat inconsistent in the games; it is given as Venice Beach in the arcade game, Los Angeles in the NES game and Hollywood in all later games. Venice Beach and Hollywood are in fact parts of Los Angeles, though.
- In the NES game he is a palette swap of Soda Popinski and in the Super Nintendo game he is a palette swap of Masked Muscle.
- After winning in the Wii game during Contender mode, he will seemingly grab onto a helicopter ladder that takes him away as he tells Little Mac, "Welcome to my world!"
