An extremely common enemy in the Mario Brothers series. The goomba is considered the lowest of Bowser's troops. As such they are one of the most commonly seen enemies in the series.

Information

Making their debut back in 'Super Mario Bros.', the goombas were described as being 'little mushrooms who betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom'. Although not related to koopas, these mushrooms are commonly associated with Bowser's army. They are not all that strong, described as being the 'underling of the underling'. Their ability to attack is pretty much limited to running into their opponent or jumping on them. They have long sharp teeth, but these seem to be rarely used for attack. Although this does not limit the versatility offered when they use wings, spikes, and other things. However, unprotected goombas are easily defeated by simply being stepped on and squished. Although some goombas (particularily the 'round' ones in 'Super Mario World') cannot be squished at all.

Despite the label of 'bad guy', there are actually a number of goombas that are not at all bad or 'reformed'. There is a small goomba settlement west of Toad Town and a number of them live in Rogueport. The respect they receive from Bowser's army seems to be minimal, as they are treated as caged beasts (being kept in barrels). This treatment is uncalled for, since there are a number of exceptional goombas. Such examples are Professor Frankly (who taught Kolorado), Goompa (who taught The Master), and Gooma (who taught Tayce T.). Of course, there is also Goombario and Goombella who proved valuable allies for Mario. They are often misunderstood as being mindless minions, when quite often they are exceptionally intelligent or powerful.

Trivia

• Goombas appear in Link's Awakening from the Zelda series as enemies. They appear only in 'sidescrolling' areas found in the basements of dungeons. They are easily killed by most weapons, but using the Roc's Feather to jump on them will always reveal a heart.
• In the original SMB manual, apparently they betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Princess Peach expands on this point when Bowser gives the Vibe Wand to a Goomba to take to Peach's Castle, assuming that he wouldn't be suspicious.
• The first and only game so far that you get to play as a Goomba (not counting specific characters in the Paper Mario games) is Mario Superstar Baseball.
• Goombas have appeared as enemies in some areas of Super Smash Bros Melee; the Goombas has its own trophy in the very game.
