Phantoon is one of the four monster bosses of Super Metroid, being the boss of the Wrecked Ship.
Information
Phantoon was a mysterious being that was described in the instruction manual as the ghost of the Wrecked Ship. It took on the appearance of a one-eyed squid-like creature, and according to the instruction manual also had tapped into the brainwaves of Mother Brain, although the extent to which Mother Brain controlled Phantoon as well as the extent to which Phantoon was affiliated with the Space Pirates is unclear.
When battling Samus Aran, Phantoom shed its own form of tears from its closed eye, which were blue flames that encircled Phantoon. When its eye was closed, Phantoon was transparent as well as translucent and thus could not be harmed by Samus's attacks. However, whenever it opened its eye, Phantoon would become solid and could be attacked with any of Samus's weapons. Samus eventually destroyed Phantoom, which restored the Wrecked Ship's power as well as clearing out the resident ghost-like Coverns, which were presumably subservient to Phantoon.
