Smeargle is a painting Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation Pokémon games.

Information

Smeargle is a unique Pokémon that resembles a bipedal beagle with a long, paintbrush-like tail. A special fluid oozes from the tip of its tail, which it uses as paint to mark its territory. There are over 5,000 different marks. The color of this mysterious fluid is predetermined for each Smeargle. Once it becomes an adult, it has a tendency to let its comrades plant footprints on its back.

Smeargle is most well-known for its unique moveset. It only learns the move Sketch every 10 levels (which equals ten times). Smeargle's Sketch move will permanently copy the last move of the opponent's moveset into Smeargle's moveset in place of that Sketch, although there are certain moves that it cannot copy. By consequence, it cannot learn any TM or HM moves.

Appearances

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Smeargle is uncommonly found in the Ruins of Alph. In Pokémon: Emerald Version, it is the only Pokémon found in Artisan Cave.

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Pokémon: Platinum Version it can be rarely found in the northern area of Route 212 (as well as 208 in Platinum) when using the Pokéradar.

Other Games

In Pokémon Colosseum, a Shadow Smeargle could be snagged from a trainer in the Snagem Hideout. After being purified, this Smeargle could be traded to any of the third generation Pokémon games. In Pokémon Channel, the player receives a Smeargle from Professor Oak, and it also appears in the Smeargle's Art Study program, rating the player's paintings.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Smeargle can be found in Secret Storage 20, Endless Level 27, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Smeargle can be found in the fifteenth floor of Howling Forest as well as the fourth through sixth floors of Western Cave, and in Explorers of Darkness and Time, Smeargle are found in the first five floors of the Foggy First and the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort. The Smeargle that is rescued from the Howling Forest joins the team and can change the team flag by request.

Other Appearances

  • Smeargle have occasionally appeared in the Pokémon anime and were featured in one Johto episode involving a trio of Smeargle vandals.
  • Smeargle also appeared in the Pokémon Adventures manga, where one tormented Gold and turned out to belong to Whitney, who then gave the Smeargle to DJ Mary. A group of Smeargle were also shown in the Artisan Cave during the Emerald arc.

Trivia

  • Its name seems to be combination of "smear" (as in with paint) and "beagle" (the dog its appearance seems to be based on).
