Kurt is a supporting character appearing in Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SouilSilver Versions.

Background[edit]

Kurt was a stubborn old man who lived in Azalea Town with his granddaughter. He is known as a Pokéball expert who is able to craft custom Pokéballs from Apricots. When Gold first visited him, he was preoccupied with Team Rocket's occupation of the village, as they were cutting tails off of the Slowpoke of Slowpoke Well to sell. Describing the situation to Gold, he was enraged enough to run off towards the Slowpoke Well in an attempt to drive them away. He wound up startling the guard at the well's entrance, but also fell into the well and hurt his back. He then lamented his declining physical prowess and returned to his home once Gold arrived to challenge them in his place.

After Team Rocket was driven away, Kurt thanked the player with either a Lure Ball in Gold/Silver/Crystal or a Fast Ball in HeartGold/SoulSilver. He also opened up his Pokéball-making services to them, making one Pokéball from an apricot (or more than one of the same apricot in HeartGold/SoulSilver) per day. In Crystal, he is involved in the GS Ball event, where he would examine it for a day if it was brought to him. Kurt was then startled by the GS Ball moving when Gold returned and ran outside, saying that the Ilex Forest had become restless and returned the GS Ball to Gold, asking him to investigate.

Other Appearances[edit]

  • Kurt appeared in an episode of the Pokémon anime, where he helped Ash and his friends when Team Rocket was trying to steal the town's Slowpoke. They had been sent to Johto primarily to deliver the GS Ball to him, and Kurt then began investigating it. This subplot was promptly dropped as the anime's makers decided to use Celebi in the fourth anime movie rather than using it in an anime arc.
  • Kurt also appeared throughout the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where his ancestors had made the first Pokéballs before companies began mass producing them. He made custom Pokéballs for both Gold and Silver, but the Masked Man made him over his plans for the GS Ball by taking his granddaughter hostage. He was also revealed to have been part of a group of friends including Professor Oak, Agatha, Pryce and the Day-Care couple when they were younger.

Trivia[edit]

  • His granddaughter is unnamed in the games, but is known as Maisy in other media.
