Nidorina is the evolved form of the female Nidoran appearing in the first generation Pokémon games. As it evolved from the female Nidoran, Nidorina themselves are also exclusively female, with their male counterparts being Nidorino.

Information[edit]

Nidorina evolves from the female Nidoran at Level 16. It is usually docile, but it attacks with bites and scratches when enraged. It relies on such attacks as its horn develops slowly, leading it to prefer not to fight. Nidorina's thorns usually retract when they feel relaxed, usually when resting in their burrow or spending time amongst their friends and family. They also become nervous when separated from the others. In contrast, these barbs are quickly raised when they sense danger.

They emit ultrasonic cries which can befuddle enemies. Nidorina feed their young by chewing and tenderizing food, then spitting it out for them to eat. Despite these motherly tendencies, Nidorina themselves as well as their evolved form are strangely incapable of breeding. The female Nidoran can only have children before evolving into Nidorina. Nidorina evolves into Nidoqueen when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In Pokémon: Red and Blue, Nidorina appeared at the Safari Zone and could be obtained by trading a Nidorino to a trainer on Route 11. In Red, it also appeared as a prize in the Celadon City Game Corner worth 1200 coins. In Yellow, they uncommonly appeared on Routes 9 and 23 as well as in the Safari Zone. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they only appeared in the Safari Zone. Nidorina are a bit more common in Blue, LeafGreen and Yellow then in Red and FireRed.

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Nidorina appeared commonly on Routes 13, 14 and 15, only appearing on Route 15 as well as the Safari Zone's Savannah area in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Nidorina could only be caught with the use of the Pokéradar in the fourth generation games, showing up at Route 221 and Lake Valor in Pokémon: Diamond and Pearl Versions or at Route 211 in Platinum.

Other Games[edit]

In Pokémon Pinball, Nidorina could only be obtained through evolution. It also appeared in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Endless Level 58, Endless Level 64, Forever Level 8 and Mr. Who's Den. Nidorina also appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, found at the fourth through eighth floors of Lapis Cave and the forty-seventh through fiftieth floors of Wish Cave.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Nidorina appeared at the fourth through ninth floors of Mt. Bristle and the first nine basement floors of Labyrinth Cave. In Pokémon Rumble, Nidorina appeared at Eternal Tower.

Other Appearances[edit]

  • Within the Pokémon anime, one episode had two trainers whose Nidoran were in love and evolved at the end of the episode into Nidorina and Nidorino. Aside from that, most of Nidorina's exposure in the anime has been minor appearances. Whitney was also shown to have a Nidorina that was quickly defeated by Ash's Cyndaquil.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Green's Nidoran had evolved into a Nidorina by the time of the FireRed/LeafGreen arc. She later evolved her into a Nidoqueen along with her Jigglypuff and Snubbull so that they could help her Blastoise.

Trivia[edit]

  • Nidorina's name may be a combination of "needle" and "rhinoceros". Also, its name ending in "a" seems to reflect the Spanish and Italian convention of ending names and words referring to females with "a".
