Wailmer is a spherical whale-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. Its evolved form is Wailord.

Information[edit]

Wailmer can suck in a large amount of seawater into its body to inflate its body and become like a bouncing ball. The height of its bounces are elevated with the amount of water it takes in. Wailmer primarily lives in a water, but it can survive on land for a limited amount of time as its body loses potency after drying out. They usually come onto beaches to bounce around and play on sunny days. Wailmer also uniquely has nostrils located above its eyes, and they like to playfully squirt water out of their nostrils at others.

It evolves into Wailord at Level 40.

Appearances[edit]

When using the Pokéwalker, Wailmer could be caught at the Warm Beach course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In Black and White, they were commonly found by surfing in rippling water at Undella Bay (being less common there during winter) and Undella Town.

A Wailmer could also be obtained in a random trade with Hayley in My Pokémon Ranch, and it could be transferred to Diamond or Pearl (or Platinum in Japan).

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Wailmer have made various appearances starting in the Hoenn series. A trainer named Ross used one to compete in a water chariot race (which he lost to Misty) in the fifth movie. One episode featured a trainer named Robin whose live was saved by Wailmer, and they had become great friends while living at an island that he called Wailmer Island. It later evolved into a Wailord. One episode of the Sinnoh series also featured Ash and his friends helping a Wailmer that was trapped in the sewer to reach the ocean, and it also evolved into a Wailord in the process.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Wailmer have made mostly minor appearances in the Ruby/Sapphire arc, where Briney caught some of them.

Trivia[edit]

  • Wailmer's name is a play on "whale", seemingly combined with "mer" (the French word for "sea").
