The Four Sword is a magical sword that is featured in the Four Swords games of the Zelda series, with the ability to split its wielder into four identical beings. This primarily acts as a plot device to allow up to four players to all be Link within the multiplayer games.

Information[edit]

The Four Sword originated as another blade, the Picori Blade. The Picori Blade was made by the Picori people and given to the "hero of men" (an ancient Link) along with the mysterious light force for use in fighting off some unspecified evil. After this evil was slain, it was enshrined within a chest that was used to seal many evil creatures away. However, the sword was broken when Vaati forced the chest open in The Minish Cap. Link then held onto the sword's remains and had Melari reforge it as the White Sword.

Link later began seeking the Four Elements, which were slowly infused with the sword to help it regain its power. With each of the elements, he was able to use special tiles to create shadow versions of himself. These shadow selves were restricted to following his movements, but could still attack with the sword. After collecting all four elements, the Picori Sword became the Four Sword.

During the backstory of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past & Four Swords, the Four Sword was in the possession of a traveler (presumably another Link), who used the Four Sword to split himself and defeat Vaati to rescue maidens. After Vaati was defeated, Link sealed Vaati in the Four Sword, which was kept within the Four Sword Sanctuary. However, Vaati was able to escape the seal in Four Swords and capture Princess Zelda when she checked up on the sword with Link. Link then wielded the Four Sword, which split himself into four clones that operated independently and had differently-colored tunics. After Vaati was defeated, he was once more sealed within the Four Sword.

Four Swords Adventures began when Zelda and the Shrine Maidens checked up on the seal and were captured by Shadow Link. Link then drew the Four Sword in order to battle Shadow Link, which released Vaati from his seal. The Four Sword acted similarly as in the previous game, although it also needed Force Gems to power it this time. At the end of the game, Ganon was instead sealed within the Four Sword.

The Four Sword also appears in the GBA remake of A Link to the Past, where it is found in the Palace of the Four Sword within the Dark World. The Four Swords are scattered throughout the dungeon, and once Link brings them all into the final room they produce Dark Links which Link must defeat to clear the dungeon.

Trivia[edit]

  • The name is Four Sword, as opposed to the plural "Four Swords", which is only the title of the game.
  • 2000 Force Gems can be used to power the sword up in Four Swords Adventures, allowing it to shoot sword beams.
